Wichita Falls law enforcement gears up for Hotter 'N Hell Hundred

Wichita Falls area law enforcement officials will be even busier than normal this weekend protecting the public safety as an estimated 15,000 entrants in America's largest bicycle race will pedal along the streets and highways of Wichita Falls.

This race will mark the 30th anniversary of the nationally known race which immediately put this North Texas city on the map as a mecca of bicycling in 1981.

Appropriately named the Hotter 'N Hell 100 in deference to the warm August temperatures that always bathe this city of 105,000 during the race, it has grown in numbers on a regular basis to the mammoth size it has attained in 2011.

Although Wichita Falls is known as a safe, low-crime community anytime this many travelers gather in one place, public safety is always a key concern.

The Wichita Falls Police Department  under the direction of Chief Dennis Bachmann will provide traffic control and direction for the massive event.

Members of the Wichita Falls Fire Department will provide medical aid to anyone who nees it in the expected 100 degree plus weather.

The Wichita County Sheriff's Office will also provide protection under the direction of Sheriff David Duke as the cyclists trek along the roads which wind around the countryside.

Texas Department of Public Safety Officials will also be involved in protecting citizens and visitors.  Tony Fulton, of the Wichita Falls DPS Office, manned a booth in the 2010 event providing information to participants.

The world's most famous cyclist Lance Armstrong once competed in this annual race.

Armstrong went on to defeat cancer and then win the Tour de France a record seven times.

Armstrong is now a hero to thousands of cancer survivors.  He has established a foundation to raise money for cancer research.  Now 39, Armstrong still works out regularly on his bicycle and remains an inspiration to countless cancer patients around the world.

Wichita Falls law enforcement personnel will be out in full force in the next few days doing thier best to ensure the safety not only to the citizens of Wichita Falls, but also to our welcome visitors!
