Sperm no longer swimming after a few hours with that laptop
Leave it to modern technology to develop another possible health issue. This time men are the ones who endure the downfall. It appears that sperm may become damaged by those laptops and wireless connections according to scientists in Argentina. This new report appears in the respected medical journal Fertility and Sterility.
In the report scientists recount how they had obtained semen samples from 29 healthy men, placed a few drops under a laptop connected to the internet by way of Wi-Fi and hit download.
Four hours later one-quarter of the semen were no longer swimming in comparison to just 14% of semen samples stored at the same temperature away from the laptop. Nine percent of the samples had shown DNA damage in comparison to three times more than the comparison samples.
So just what caused their annihilation? Electromagnetic radiation produced during wireless communication according to Conrado Avendano of Nascentis Medicina Reproductiva in Cordoba and colleagues.
According to researchers their information suggests that using a laptop connected wirelessly to the internet and positioned close to the male reproductive organs could decrease human sperm quality.
Researchers currently do not know if this effect is caused by all laptops connected by Wi-Fi to the internet or what use conditions increase this effect.
A test done separately with a laptop turned on but not connected by Wi-Fi had found remote EM radiation from just the machine.
These findings feed the concerns raised by a couple other research teams.
Some researchers have discovered radiation from cell phones creates weak sperm in the lab for example. Last year a urologist had described how a man sitting with a laptop balanced on his knees can raise up the temperature of his scrotum to levels that are not good for sperm.
Dr. Robert D. Oates, M.D., F.A.C.S., professor of Urology at Boston University School of Medicine and president of the Society of Male Reproduction and Urology, had stated to Reuters Health that this is still unclear. Dr. Oates is the father of two children and has a laptop and iPad. He notes he does not believe that laptops are a major risk to male reproductive health. He further notes the study was in a total artificial setting and not real life biology.
Dr. Oates further mentions the fact that so far there has been no study that has ever observed laptop use and any influence on fertility or pregnancy results. Noting that all this anxiety is created for real life factual people and it does not need to be.
Nearly one in six couples in the United States have trouble conceiving and about half of the time the man is the root cause of the problem according to the American Urology Association.
Researchers note that while modern technology impact is still obscure, lifestyle does matter.
A report in Fertility and Sterility earlier this month, had demonstrated that men who consumed a diet rich in grains, fruit, low red meat, and consumed alcohol and coffee had a better chance of getting their partner pregnant during fertility treatments.
Dr. Oates does agree with researchers on one point. Men should keep themselves healthy, staying lean, consume healthy foods, exercise and no drug or tobacco use.
As far as those laptops and concerns about them Dr. Oates reflected he does not even know how many people use their laptops on their laps.
If you’re still concerned about that heat emitting from your laptop you can also purchase a laptop cooling pad to prevent overheating.
