Book signings can be as challenging as convincing consumers to purchase your publication. With my upcoming novel Blood Orchard quickly approaching its release date, I've been doing more and more research in regards to promotions. Below are a handful of links I found helpful and encouraging, along with my suggestions as well. And yes, I have done book signings at conventions and festivals, but I am inexperienced with the bookstore venues. So my book signings in the past have sucked.
Get a giant poster created with your book cover on it that you can advertise beside your signing table at the front of the bookstore. I love this idea!

Hopefully everybody knows this, but if you just sit at that signing table and smile, you'll be passed up like you're nothing more than a cardboard cut-out. This is another nice link with some great tips!

This particular site I found interesting in that it makes note to verify that there is not an event fee at the store. I personally have never heard of a bookstore charging an author to do a signing, but a helpful heads-up nonetheless. http://bookpros.blogspot.com/2009/08/booksigning-tips-expanded.html
If nothing else, these links should prepare you for the event process. I found them to be extremely insightful, and I hope it helped you as well.
