Why you should pray for Holy Spirit guidance when leading someone to salvation

Leading someone to salvation is the greatest experience any believer can encounter. Knowing that you helped another person come to a new relationship in Jesus Christ is beyond rewarding. There are several things to keep in mind, however, when leading someone to salvation, and most important is prayer- and that is not just the sinner prayer. Those ministering to others and leading them to salvation must ensure they have prayed for the Holy Spirit’s guidance before ministering.
The Holy Spirit is the true Counselor and Comforter and often when someone responds to an altar call or asks for someone to pray the “Sinner’s Prayer” with them or another prayer of salvation, they have become emotionally wrought. The person receiving prayer may be experiencing a plethora of emotions and feelings as they surrender their hearts, wills, and emotions to God. As a minister, those leading new believers must ensure they have prayed and are open to the Holy Spirit’s leading and guidance. You may feel impressed to give a word or simply remain silent and offer a comforting hug while the person releases vented emotion and repressed feelings. You must also remain alert for when someone may need more help than what you can provide. If you are ministering to someone who you suspect may have deep-rooted issues or unsolved problems, do not hesitate to move up your pastoral chain in order to find someone who can provide more one on one counseling for the individual.
Everyone responds to salvation differently and you should not be fooled by what you see. Sometimes, those at the altar call crying the loudest, shaking the hardest and falling on the floor fastest are also the quickest to leave the church or backslide; while those who stand during prayer, never shed a tear or tremble may be the ones who have the deepest inner work taking place.
Do not be fooled by appearances. Pray for the Holy Spirit’s wisdom and guidance. As leading someone to salvation is the most important task any Christian can perform in the faith; do not go it alone. Walk with the Holy Spirit and you will walk in anointing and power.
