We all do it, we go to the grocery store and grab our favorite canned foods and put them in a cart to take home and add to our canned food collection. Have you made it your New Year's resolution to eat no more GMO food and eat more organic and all natural foods? So when you shop now you have become “label readers”. Nothing wrong with that but did you ever stop to think that it may not be the food in the can that is the problem? Maybe the can itself is the problem.
There are many sources online as well as books where you can check the legitimacy on this but canned foods like beans and soups no matter if they are organic or not are lined with a chemical called BPA. An unnatural preservative that hails as the choice of large corporations everywhere for preserving canned foods. BPA is dangerous to you! Think that if you take the food out of the can that everything is alright? Wrong again. BPA has been proven to leach into the food in the can. (Look under How? BPA enters our bodies)
Even organics and all natural canned soups and beans and some other foods are sometimes lined with BPA which renders them useless in reality. Whats worse is people refuse to buy organic soups and low sodium soups because they do not want to take a trip to bland city. Problem there is, that's not entirely true about organic and low sodium canned soups, but the BPA is true. We buy canned foods because we have been taught that this is the way we should live.
We have been tricked into believing that we are no longer capable of making our own food at home and that buying it already cooked and canned is best. Do you know it takes less than 15 minutes to most to prepare a soup that will feed a family of 3-4 for at least 3 days? If you make your soups at home with actual fresh ingredients you will not have to worry about the BPA and all the other chemical “ingredients” they put in store bought canned foods.
Some people have been taught that it is easier to open a can and dump the contents into a pan and heat it up for dinner. Problem there is ignorance, we have to use the kitchen, a pan, the stove and still have to heat the food up to eat it. So are you really cutting time buy using canned foods? Plus we have to deal with all the unhealthy stuff and GMO junk they are putting in our foods today. It is much easier, safer, and healthier to make your own food in bulk at home and can or freeze it for later use.
When I say bulk I mean make large pots of foods that you regularly buy canned from the store. Some foods may be beans and soups and tomatoes and stocks. Instead buy dried beans, soak them while you are doing something else or relaxing and when they are done cook them in a slow cooker as you sleep. The next morning you have lunch and dinner and for those that are easy, lunch and dinner for the next day as well. If it is soup you made well then you have breakfast and lunch and dinner already prepared.
If you want to limit the amount of times that you eat from a large pan of food such as a chili or beans or soup you can either can or freeze most of the food when it cools some or you can do that when you and the family are tired of eating the same food over and over. Typically, a good soup does fine for most for about two days. Then they are tired of it. Its a good time to can or freeze it. If you can or freeze it in actual small canning jars you will have portions already measured out for each person in the family.
Then when you decide its a good time to eat that food again all you have to do it take it from the jar and heat it up, viola! Instant healthy meal. When it comes to soups, beans and stock you make this stuff instead of buying it and make it in a large pot and put it on your shelf for later use canned up. This is a great way to learn that you do not have to be a slave to the grocery store and the poison food they sell today.
Learn to make all you can at home and teach the recipes to your kids, there is no better gift you can give them these days. Stress the reason you do not buy certain canned foods from the store now, talk about the BPA lined cans and what BPA does to a persons health. Children need to be taught the truth and how to live a happier, more sustainable, organic life or they are doomed, as it turns out. Have we really became slaves to big agriculture and the modernized food industry? Its time for a change!
