Animal, Vegetable, Miracle cover
Do you ever think about how far the food you eat has traveled to reach your table? Perhaps you thought about it when gas prices were pushing $5.00 gallon and we all saw how it impacted our grocery bill.
Barbara Kingsolver uprooted her family in Arizona, where virtually all food and water is trucked in, and moved to southwest Virginia and vowed to eat only foods grown locally for a full year. She chronicled the year in her book, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle.
The family raised much of their own food and bought most other items from the local farmer’s market. This not only meant learning to wait for the food to grow, but only eating food when it’s in season. We can buy most any produce year-round at our grocery store, but it comes at a cost of taste and nutritional value. How many of us know what grows in our own area, and what time of the year it’s in season?
Animal, Vegetable, Miracle is already a bestseller a great read for anyone concerned for our economy’s dependence on fossil fuel, as well as anyone exploring eating healthier and supporting local farmers.
