In 2007, Sister Laurie Brink, O.P., delivered a speech to the 'Leadership Conference of Women Religious' in which she asked the question: “Who’s to say that the movement beyond Christ is not, in reality, a movement into the very heart of God?” Because of questions like this, Sister Laurie got into some hot water with the (CDF) 'Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith.' In her defense, religious and theologians of a more progressive persuasion came to her defense, stating that she was only offering the choices religious sisters have in heresy or orthodoxy.

But in offering such a choice, Sister Laurie reveals the cancer which has struck American Catholicism today. The cancer of progressivism, which, incidentally, the CDF, in faithfulness to holy Mother Church, desires to excise from the Body of Christ.

So, technically, if we break down the semantics of Sister Laurie's speech, we see what is common to all progressive rhetoric. We see pandora's box, fully opened, yet covered by a flimsy veil of tradition, and faithfulness to orthodox Catholicism. American Women religious, like the words reflected in her speech, in 'moving beyond Jesus Christ and His Church,' have, in all too many cases, moved beyond the gospel and the Pope and joined forces with radical feminists, pro-choice politicians, and atheist secular progressives in hope of some ill defined pseudo-utopian liberation sans the authority of the Church.

But what is the real reason for so many apostate women religious (and quite a few religious men as well)?
The answer can be found in the words of Pope St. Leo the Great as he addressed the integrity of Jesus Christ and the mission of His Church as reflected by the Virgin birth of Christ and the virginal grace which is bestowed by the Church's baptismal font: "If you seek the truth about his nature (Jesus') then recognize the matter as human; if you want to find the secret of his origin, then acknowledge the divine power. For the Lord Jesus Christ came to take away our infection, not to be infected by it; he did not come to succumb to our vices but to heal them. He came to heal the malady of our corruption and all the wounds of our scarred souls. The simple reason why American Catholic religious sisters (and brothers for that matter!) flirt with, and plunge into, the progressive pool of propaganda is simple. They are trying to escape the responsibility (objective morality) which comes with saving grace!
And for that reason they have drug many an innocent soul with them! And this is why the CDF is cleaning up their act. Amen to that!
