Friends, as you all know or will know soon, our neighboring country of Haiti has just experienced a devastating earthquake, hitting 7.0 on the Ritcher Scale. Facts are still trickling in but we know that thousands of people have been displaced, a hospital collapsed and a already poor nation will be shunned into further poverty and misery.
I know that some of you may be thinking that we should focus on our own problems first. Other's will help Haiti, let us worry about our island that is also being ravaged by crime and economic crisis. Although I share the concern those of you may have with our island, and I agree that we must act on that, the fact remains that a little effort on our part can have a positively disproportionate result in Haiti. The amount of money we spend on a night out in Old San Juan, Santurce or our favorite drinking hole can easily feed an entire family for days, provide shelter, buy a tarp for children to sleep under or medication for the sick.
I know times are tough for us, and this isn't about asking for a second mortgage on your house or half your paycheck. For now, all we ask is for your willingness to help, to be a part of a community, here in our island, that will stand up for our brothers and sisters in Haiti.
Tonight we know of the disaster but we are still figuring out how to get the help their way. Tomorrow and in the coming days we will have more information on what you and I can do to help, but for now, all we are asking is one question: Can we count on you?
Please say yes.
Email us at PuertoRicoForHaiti@gmail.com and we will email you more information as soon as we have it.
