If you love comics, and you wouldn't be reading this article if you didn't, then you've likely heard that there's a campaign to get a sequel to the much-missed masterpiece, Dredd 3D, which came out last year. First of all, if you haven't seen it yet, see it. And second of all, once you see it, wasn't that awesome?
It was, wasn't it? And that's why so many people should get on board with this campaign. Not only because it was an awesome movie that deserves more exposure, but also to prove that a grassroots campaign to get a sequel to an excellent movie off the ground is possible, and yes, it can even be a success.
A lot of people will say, "Uh, it's been done before," and they'll likely point to the Firefly movie, Serenity. And as we all already know, Serenity was a flop. But a Dredd sequel could be different and here's why--Dredd has a lot more going for it than the cult show Firefly ever did back when Serenity was released. It's been streaming on Netflix. Yes, the fandom behind Joss Whedon's space western was legion, but this is a show that has just recently gained a lot more popularity because of Whedon's recent work with The Avengers. People are going back to watch shows like Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Firefly, and if Serenity was made today, it would be a huge success. The same goes for a Dredd sequel.
Most of the only people who saw Dredd 3D when it was out in theaters were fans of the character, and Judge Dredd is no Batman. But with Netflix, more and more people have seen Dredd 3D and have loved it. The biggest problem was to get people to forget the terrible Sly Stallone version in the 90s, and this recent film has wiped the slate. People know of the movie now and love it. If a sequel was made on the cheap, a lot of people would actually see it. It could work and WOULD probably work. They wouldn't blow their budget this time.
But what are your thoughts? Do you think a sequel to Dredd 3D should be made?
