Fans of The Disney Channel and former Disney star Selena Gomez saw a familiar face on the Feb. 24 premiere of “the Voice.” That’s because one of the “Wizard of Waverly Place” star’s concert tour opening acts auditioned on the show.
YouTube star Christina Grimmie -- who performed a four-chair-turning rendition of Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” for judges Adam Levine, Shakira, Usher and Blake Shelton -- isn’t just known for her two million video channel subscribers. In 2011 she toured for six weeks with Selena Gomez & The Scene in the “We Own the Night” tour. And in 2013, she was back again, opening for the North American dates on Gomez’ “Stars Dance” tour.
In 2011, Grimmie also appeared on Disney Channel's “So Random,” where she performed her song, “Advice.”
Still, even with all of that buzz, the 19-year old Jersey girl has yet to land a record deal. According to NBC Philadelphia, a sneak peak of Grimmie’s “The Voice” performance was uploaded on YouTube and had already earned more than one million views prior to the show. While all four judges argued over who would coach her this season, the Marlton, New Jersey native ultimately chose Levine.
Following “The Voice” premiere, Grimmie’s mentor Selena Gomez tweeted her support with this message: “ @TheRealGrimmie what an amazing performance tonight on @NBCTheVoice so proud of how far you have come. Excited to see you go all the way.”
“The Voice” airs on Monday nights at 8 p.m. ET and Tuesday nights at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
