The NYPD is urging New Yorkers to download the new iOS 7 operating system. The new update, which includes hundreds of features, and an extremely different look, is making waves across the country. However, with the increasing iphone theft in NYC, officers think the new operating system will help them out. This update has a few new security features that are going to make it easier to track down your iPhone, if it’s ever stolen.
The New York police are very determined to educate users on iPhone theft, they have even been handing out flyers around Apple Stores that describe how helpful the new update will be to locating lost iPhones.
One of these features is called Aviation Lock. It requires anyone who is trying to turn off the ‘Find My Phone’ app to input the Apple ID and password that go along with the phone. The Find My Phone app, allows a friend to put in your information and find your cellphone if it goes missing or is stolen. This app actually works with most of Apple’s products, including iPod touch, iPad, and Mac.
Within Find my iPhone, there is also Lost Mode – for anyone with iOS 6 or later. This will track your phone’s location history and display it in a recent location section. Find My iPhone is really a great tool, you can see your phone on a map from another device, trigger your phone to play a loud sound for two minutes at high volume (even if your phone is on silent), remotely lock your device, driving directions to the location of your device and battery charge indicator. This is a fantastic tool that would assist in a lost or stolen situation. It’s so hard to get away with stealing an iPhone these days, as long as the owner takes the right steps to locate it.
So, take the NYPD’s advice and update your phone. Even if you don’t make sure you know how to use Find my iPhone and encourage your friends and family to do the same.
