Well, the holidays are almost over and for some people it brings a feeling of total exhaustion. For others, it brings a renewed sense of wanting to prepare for the new year and start out fresh. A perfect way to welcome in the new year is by giving your garage or attic a good cleaning out and de-cluttering.
Putting the holiday decorations back in their stored locations gives you the opportunity to look around and see what you have in the garage or attic that you need to throw out or give to a local charity. Make a list of what you see in the garage or attic, that you know you no longer want or need. Making a list helps you stay focused instead of being overwhelmed, when you look at the task of organizing such a big space.
Think about your schedule when you make your plan to organize. Is it better for you to take a day and get it done, or divide you time over several days? If you divide your time over several days, try to accomplish working on the biggest items on your list first.
January is also the perfect time to buy storage bins and organizing supplies. Many places have sales on the bins used to store holiday items. The holiday bins used for things like ornaments often have dividers in them, so they can also come in handy for storing multiple items in the garage, like boxes of nails, screws, and small tools.
Putting your organizational skills to work after the holidays is a great way to start the new year. If you can accomplish organizing the garage, just think what you can do with the house!
