Sleep is crucial for reenergizing the body and keeping a person healthy. In fact, people who do not get a good night’s sleep are more likely to suffer from illnesses ranging from the common cold to high blood pressure. Insomnia—which is a condition that prevents people from sleeping for long periods of time—can be a serious danger to health since everybody needs sleep.
Sleep has many natural benefits. It prevents diabetes and heart disease, makes people less likely to be stressed and unhappy, and lowers the risk of becoming obese since sleep also helps to keep a person’s metabolism balanced. Furthermore, when someone does become ill with a flu or a cold they tend to get tired. The body can repair itself naturally when it is asleep so people who are fighting an infection or virus need sleep (and, in most cases, medicine) in order to feel better.
Getting the proper amount of sleep also makes people more alert and aware during their waking hours. It lowers the risk of injury and heightens work and school performance. If people are well rested then they can concentrate more easily which makes it easier for them to remember information and perform tasks. Most doctors suggest that everyone should try and get at least seven hours a sleep a night, although eight hours is preferred by many.
Some people have more trouble falling asleep than others and doing things like reading bedtime stories, listening to relaxing music or even drinking a warm glass of milk before going to bed can help to prepare the mind for its much-needed rest.
