Why should you eat organic food?

If you’re still wondering why there is all this talk about organic food, here are some reason why you should consider eating organic.

The President’s Cancer panel (an advisory group that considers testimony from several cancer researchers to inform the president's policies on cancer prevention) suggests eating organic to avoid pesticides found in food that are linked to several types of cancer.

Many conventional foods today are genetically modified. This means that mutagenesis (mutation breeding) occurs when an organism is exposed to radiation or chemicals to create a non-specific but stable change. Organic foods prohibit the use of GMO’s.

When you purchase organic food, you do not have to worry about food additives and flavor enhancers such as aspartame, high fructose corn syrup, MSG, dyes, contaminants such as mercury, and preservatives like sodium nitrate. Many of these are associated with many of today's health problems and people are increasingly becoming more and more allergic to these additives.

Studies have shown that organic food promotes weight loss. Chemicals found in conventional food often bind to fat, and once absorbed, often stay in the body for a lifetime. Over 350 chemicals can accumulate in your body fat.

Organic farming prohibits the use of antibiotics, growth hormones, and genetically modified vaccines in animals.

Organic fruits and vegetables contain up to 40% more antioxidants than conventional produce.

Organic foods have a higher concentration of important minerals such as zinc and iron.

Now that you have been informed and are now ready to shop for organic foods, here is a helpful list called the “dirty dozen” to make more sense of what foods to purchase organic. These are the foods have the highest amount of pesticides.
