It seems that cheating politicians are always in the news.

A Sense of Entitlement
Most politicians have a certain sense of entitlement. Many of them feel that they can do whatever they want with impunity, including having extramarital affairs. Since they consider themselves to be above the law, they feel they are exempt from the rules that apply to everyone else.

Many cheaters actually thrive on the excitement associated with having an extramarital affair.

Just to clear up your record of alleged or confirmed chaters. While I'm not a big supporter of Gavin Newsom; he didn't cheat on his wife, SHE cheated on him and left him. He did sleep with a married woman (of a friend of his) after his wife left him, so I suppose he was complicit in helping another person cheat,which certainly isn't admirable. But, since your story is about politicians cheating on their wives, his example doesn't quite fit.
"Is He Cheating on You? – 829 Telltale Signs" -- 829! Conveniently categorized! Just like the warning signs of cancer. Get a diagnosis, get to work.
My sympathy is more & more with Gov. Sanford. He fell in love (by her own account, Mrs. Sanford and he were never romantically in love.) Yes, he handled it atrociously,& so did Mrs. Sanford--they should have resolved this in private and saved themselves the humiliation of a vulgar public spectacle & vulgar pseudo-medicalization of their deepest feelings.
The poor chap was obviously starved for passion (not just sex - you can get sex closer that Argentina.) Sexless, puritanical wives -- I mean emotionally, not physically-- who think that a "relationship"--they mean love -- is "work", a sort of technical maintenance project, like putting the car up on blocks and tinkering with the suspension, can't provide that,or even understand what it is.

Having been married before (and totally faithful), maybe these men cheat because most people (men and women) are just not naturally monogamous and have many opportunities to cheat. Eventually they stop fighting it. Stars have the same problem. Plus, some spouses (including my ex) stop showing interest in their partners, which amounts to sexual torture.
Yes, we should keep our promises, but some promises ask way too much from our future self. I think people should stop being so judgmental, and ask why most people would like to cheat on occasion if they didn't feel so guilty about it (let's be honest: how many wives would want a night with Johnny Depp?).
Willpower can take you far, but it can also make you miserable: perhaps its better to love openly once in a while and try to deal with a little sexual jealousy instead of unrelenting sexual boredom and emptiness.
