There are many reasons why people own guns. One of many is what the Founding Fathers said in the Federalist Papers (46), http://www.foundingfathers.info/federalistpapers/fedindex.htm . The 2nd Amendment and the God given right to self-defense (SD). When it comes to getting help from a 911 call the response from police varies from 7 minutes to as much as 30 minutes; http://www.apbweb.com/featured-articles/1188-response-times-city-to-city.html & http://www.city-data.com/forum/politics-other-controversies/884214-what-average-police-response-time-should.html therefore. it is a good reason to have a gun for protection. Please review the pictures of why SD is so important for your safety.
If you own a gun, you must know how and when to use it. Florida has some of the best SD laws in the country. It is the “Castle Doctrine.” It cover three main features of SD: 1- It establishes, in law, the presumption that a criminal who forcibly enters or intrudes into your home or occupied vehicle is there to cause death or great bodily harm, therefore a person may use any manner of force, including deadly force, against that person”; http://www.gunlaws.com/FloridaCastleDoctrine.htm 2-You are not required to retreat, but you may fight back even with “Deadly Force; 3- It provides that when you use this force, in fear for your life or harm, you cannot be prosecuted. Here is a conversation that provides some reason to be prepared; the source is unknown:
I was once asked by a lady visiting if I had a gun in the house. I said I did.
She said, 'Well I certainly hope it isn't loaded!'
To which I said, "Of course it is loaded, it can't work without bullets!"
She then asked, "Are you that afraid of someone evil coming into your house?"
My reply was, "No not at all. I am not afraid of the house catching fire either,
but I have fire extinguishers around, and they are all loaded too."
The Florida 790 law also provides self-defense for you and others in your presents. http://archive.flsenate.gov/statutes/index.cfm?m&App_mode=Display_Statute&URL=Ch0790/titl0790.htm&StatuteYear=2000&Title=-%3E2000-%3EChapter%20790
With these good Florida SD laws in place, the gun owner has very important responsibilities. It is best that the gun owner get qualified training and have a plan for when different scenarios take place. The type of plan must include the answers to these types of questions: how to alert the family; what are the NO SHOOT directions in your home or business (bullets go through walls), hence, what is the penetration force of the ammo being used; do you have a backup plan, if you, the gun holder is knocked down; when there are children in the home, are they trained about guns. These are just some of the responsible questions that training needs to answer correctly.
Training is not cheap, but is very valuable. It is the same a owning a car, insurance and maintenance is required both by law and for your safety. Good qualify training is available from several sources shown here: Gander Mountain, Lake Mary; Volusia County Gun and Hunt Club, http://www.volusiacountygunandhuntclub.com/ ; Terry Hall Enterprises, http://www.terry-hall.org ; and Dave Pruitt, depruitt@aol.com . Check with these people to evaluate what you need and can afford.
