Why outdoor workouts are particularly important in the spring

Russian foolishness on EnglishRussia.com

I had already decided to write this article about adjusting to warm temperatures when I landed on this picture of a russian woman taking her outdoor exercise to an extreme. As strange as it is, I must admit that I've seen more bizarre displays of fitness foolishness on warm summer days around Lake Calhoun...which reminded me of one more reason why outdoor workouts are important in the spring.

One of the great benefits of heading outdoors on a 40 degree spring day is that the crowds (and the crazies) are still indoors. There is plenty of room on running paths, snow has cleared from road shoulders making bike lanes more accessible, and slushy puddles have all but disappeared from hiking trails throughout the state parks. While these not-quite-warm-enough temperatures are frustrating for some, the spring climate gives athletes a wide open space to play.

Another great benefit of outdoor training in the spring is that it allows the body to adjust to increasing temperatures. There is plenty of literature about the dangers of running in extreme cold or extreme heat, but here in Minnesota we also have to tolerate extreme temperature changes from day to day. Runners may brave 25 degree wind chills one day and then peel down to shorts and a bra top for a jog in the 75 degree sun only two days later. This change in temperatures can be taxing to the cardiovascular system. It is not uncommon for outdoor athletes to notice a spike in their heart rate and a slower pace on the first few days when the mercury hits 75 or above. That spike is the result of the body's efforts to re-learn how to sweat efficiently and cool the body. To avoid that training speed bump, get outside for your run or ride now as the temperatures graduate from the 40's and 50's to more sweaty summer climates.

When you head outside, remember to stay hydrated, dress in layers, and if you stop to stretch, avoid congested intersections and men in suits.
