Maui has long been a popular wedding and honeymoon destination, and that's not surprising. Stunningly beautiful, the island offers isolated beaches, a huge assortment of outdoor activities, the restaurants and clubs of colorful Lahaina, and a range of accommodations to suit any budget.
No wonder Maui was voted "Best Island in the World" last year by readers of Conde Nast Traveler--and for the 17th time!
Here are just two reasons to have a wedding in Maui:
- If you're a fan of the 2011 Adam Sandler movie, "Just Go With," you can get married in a location scouted and created for the film. On the grounds of Makena Beach & Golf Resort, the beautiful site -- now used for wedding ceremonies -- is surrounded on three sides by water and is approached via a picturesque stepping-stone walkway.
- Gay civil unions became legal in Hawaii on January 1, and a day later a company called Gay Hawaii Wedding coordinated its first legal gay civil union on a secluded beach on Maui's south shore. Since then the company has coordinated the marriages of gay couples from New York, California, Oklahoma, Texas, Oregon, and other states. The company's civil weddings can be religious or non-religious, with traditional or contemporary (or personally-written) vows. Numerous locations around the island are available, with sunset weddings tending to be the most popular.
