BOOK REVIEW

Why Men Love Bitches -
From Doormat to Dreamgirl
A Woman's Guide to Holding Her Own in a Relationship
by Sherry Argov

I'm fahklumpt and kumfumbled - I just don't get this book. Or rather, I don't get the title and why Argov felt it necessary to dub a woman who takes care of herself and owns her power a 'BITCH.'

Now don't get me wrong, this book is an entertaining wealth of information and insight into the male mind, and *I recommend it for every woman who dates - easy reading, user-friendly suggestions, eye-opening comparisons. Any reader can quickly identify where she falls in the Doormat - Dreamgirl continuum.

*Qualifier - I recommend this book to women who can take in the information and sift it through their authenticity and integrity filters. I never suggest that women play games or be inauthentic in the pursuit of a man.

To the author's credit, she shares '...I'm not recommending that a woman have an abrasive disposition... The woman I am describing is kind yet strong... She knows what she wants but won't compromise herself to get it.' Now that's something I can relate to.

However, Argov writes 'Don't even kill a bug when he's around. Don't change a tire. In fact, don't even change a light bulb.' EEECK, I'm envisioning a woman who is helpless, dependent, and maybe even dimwitted. (How many women does it take to change a light bulb? One. Just one.)

I do believe that author Sherry Argov has done women a disservice in choosing her title. A strong, independent woman is not a bitch - she is a strong, independent woman. A bitch is unkind, self-serving, and abrasive. Let's not confuse the two, and let's not give men (or anyone) the suggestion that there is any hint of bad or wrong or flawed lurking in (healthy and balanced) feminine strength and independence.
