It has been known for some dogs to continuously attempt to chase lights of any kind following exposure to a laser pointer; becoming obsessed with passing car headlights, the sun reflecting off objects, or shadows moving. The compulsion to pursue can create behavioral problems - and even be a potential danger to your pet.
It may seem like innocent, harmless fun to watch your dog chase a red dot all over the room, but long after the laser pointer has been put away, some dogs will continue to search for the dot, ignoring their owner's commands, thus risking dangerous consequences should the animal run into the street.
If your pet shows any signs of becoming obsessed with finding the 'dot' long after you have finished playing with the laser pointer, then it is strongly advised to refrain from using a pointer around your pet in future.
Cats are less likely to be affected in the same way that dogs can be.
