No couple enters into the relationship thinking about the day they want to dissolve that relationship. Given the success and failure rates of marriages, it would be a great idea to possibly think about a prenuptial agreement if your situation calls for one. If you are a celebrity, you would be a fool to enter a marriage without a prenuptial agreement. Yes, you love your soon to be spouse, but let’s not be stupid here. You sort of need to look out for what you’ve worked hard to obtain in your career and not allow someone to take half of everything. Now, don’t get me wrong, I know that in Kobe Bryant’s case Vanessa would be walking away from their marriage with money and property. Knowing that marriages end, make sure to have your affairs in order just in case the relationship takes a wrong turn.
The National Vital Statistics show that divorce rates in 2010 were at 3.6% per 1,000 total populations, this was a slight increase from the 2008 and 2009 percentages.
Reasons why couples get divorced
- Infidelity
- Communication Breakdown
- Physical, Psychological, or Emotional Abuse
- Financial Issues
- Sexual Incompatibility
- Boredom
- Religious and Cultural Strains
- Child Rearing
- Addiction
- Differences in Priorities and Expectations
In Kobe Bryant’s case, a prenuptial agreement would have been helpful. TMZ has reported that Vanessa Bryant will receive a couple properties, one being for her mother and a divorce settlement that hasn’t been finalized yet. Now why does Vanessa’s mother get a home? This is totally bonkers in my opinion. Her mother should not be able to walk away from her daughter marriage with a home. Given this piece of information, I would have been first in line to sign a prenuptial agreement.
If any of the examples apply, you should consider have a prenuptial agreement:
- You have assets such as a home, stock or retirement funds
- Own all or parts of a business
- You may be receiving an inheritance
- You have children and/or grandchildren from a previous marriage
- Once of you is much wealthier than the other
- One of you will be supporting the other through college
- You have loved ones who need to be taken care of, such as elderly parents
- You have or are pursuing a degree or license in a potentially lucrative profession such as medicine
- You could see a big increase in income because your business is taking off
