Why is Hillary spending election day overseas?

By now most people who keep up with the news are aware that Hillary Clinton bolted out of the country a few days ago to spend election day overseas.  This curious move has political observers wondering.

Why did she see the need to get out of town quickly?

There are obvious and not-so-obvious answers to that question.

Let's take a look at the explanations, none of which would be admitted by the Clintons, Obama, or anyone else in the Democratic Party.

First, Hillary does not wish to be too closely associated with the current administration, given the avalanche of voter backlash against it.  The Clintons are nothing if not highly politically astute.  If Hillary has any remaining ambition for the White House, then distancing herself from an Administraiton in dire straits is a good move.  True enough, Bill stumped relentlessly for Democrats.  But Hillary did not.

Second, many insiders close to the Clintons are convinced that Hillary will challenge Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination for President in 2012.  Obama is quickly becoming a liability, and the Clintons still believe that the Presidency was rightfully Hillary's in 2008.  Unless Obama can rebound out of the 30% range in public approval, expect a challenge from Hillary.

Third, some political insiders believe that Obama will decide not to run again in 2012.  If this turns out to be true, Hillary would be the first choice among the Party faithful.  The question is, would independents and nominal Democrats go for it, given that Hillary's political ideology is very close to Obama's, although it is couched in more moderate language.

Fourth, Hillary has exhibited a penchant for speaking on her own, even when her opinions have been in direct conflict with the White House, and even before Obama became so unpopular.  A few Clinton-watchers note that the subtle attitude exhibited by Bill and Hillary indicates they believe the current leadership chosen by Obama has been inept, politically ignorant, and ultimately bad for the Democratic Party.  An entire series of missteps by the White House only further underscores the Clinton discontent. Publicly, of course, they express support for Obama.  But this is entirely by design.  Behind the scenes the ineptitude of the Obama Administration has clearly been an embarrassment for the poliltically-astute Clintons.

The final polls for the 2010 midterm elections indicate the possibility of an unprecedented 60-70 seat gain for Republicans in the House, and a gain of at least 8 or 9 seats in the Senate.

If I were Hillary, I'd want to get the heck out of Dodge too, and hide once I got there.

"The final polls for the 2010 midterm elections indicate the possibility of an unprecedented 60-70 seat gain for Republicans in the House, and a gain of at least 8 or 9 seats in the Senate."

So I guess we'll see an article expressing disappointment tomorrow if it turns out to be anything less?

you must be delusional...haven't you been reading all the conservative excuses for the past six months? It will me ACORN fraud (sort of a Freddy Krueger sequeal where freddy is re-born)...it will be new black panthers (somehow the lonely two new black panthers will be spotted al over the country at hundreds of polling places)...so, if it doesn't live up to their predictions, it was fraud, but if the conservatives make out like bandits, fraud is the farthest thing on their minds.

Barry O. has a snowball's chance in hell to run in 2012 yet alone survive any semblance of being president of the United States and leader of the free world....this will carry from this time forward to the end of his term in office. The hierarchy of the D.N.C as well as Barry O.'s constituents will continue to distance themselves from Barry O. and his administration as was made obvious by those democrats running for political office or re-election. Some even had the same feeling when Billy Clinton showed up to their rallies ! The same "handlers" who were the puppeteers for both Bush Sr. & Jr., Clinton and Barry O. will be the same operatives behind the scenes if and when Hillary runs.....status quo maintaining the status quo ! New blood from the right is coming to Washington and will be swore in shortly ! Likewise the same will happen in 2012 and this time we will know who we are electing and everything about their past ! This current ruse is over .....period !

The four reasons posted in this article are completely invalid because there's a fifth reason that trumps them utterlly and completely: By law, the Secretary of State is barred from engaging in any political activity --that includes campaigning, fundraising, and even endorsing a candidate in any election race.

That is the only relevant fact here. It's the law. Period. The end.

Sorry to bust your bubble on this one Anthony but if you're going to disseminate information, please try to have your facts in order. It does no good to generate this kind of speculative narrative among readers and/or the electorate, most of whom don't know the nuances of American law, nor should they be expected to. You, on the other hand, have the privilege is speaking from a forum --marginal though the Examiner forum may be, it's still a forum. Using it responsibly is an obligation that should go without say.

Nice try, my esteemed fellow Examiner, but no cigar (despite it being Clinton). The fact that Hillary did not campaign is not even the main point or thrust of this article. The point was she left the country entirely...to distance herself from a sinking ship. You know it, and I know it.

  • Bruce Maiman 1 year ago

No Anthony --you BELIEVE it, but you have no proof. It doesn't matter what you believe, it only matters what you can prove, and it's unfortunate that in your article, you didn't even have the professionalism to acknowledge existing law so that readers could have a fair shake on every possible explanation. In a real news setting, an editor would have insisted you make mention of it, if, for no other reason, because that's responsible journalism --even in an opinion piece. It goes to credibility.

It's okay to have an opinion, and it's okay to believe it without really being able to prove motive and intent (as a real prosecutor of facts in the courtroom would be required to do), but witholding "evidence," so to speak... that's a bit disappointing, wouldn't you agree? Or did YOU have an alterior motive for its omission?

Yea....Hillary wouldn't do anything like that....least wise not out in the open where everyone could see ! She is pretty good at sneaking in and out of the U.N....and how about those Bilderberg meetings huh? She good....real good ! Did someone say to her "catch ya later"....perhaps someday !

That sums it up pretty well.
