Why is grass fed organic beef healthier, and where can I find it in Atlanta?

Grass fed organic beef has become popular in the US, for three reasons.

  • Helathier People
  • Healthier Cows
  • Sustainable Farming

Grass fed organic beef is an excellent source of nutrition. The cuts of meat are less fatty, so they have fewer calories and are lower in harmful Omega-6 fatty acids, which have been linked to heart disease. On the other hand, grass fed beef is high in helpful Omega-3 fatty acids, which have been shown to combat heart disease. They are also high in vitamin E, which may help lower cholesterol, and defend against cardiovascular disease.

Natural grass fed beef also means healthier cows. By feeding cows an unnatural diet of corn, farmers cause unnecessary health issues. In fact, a recent study from Cornell showed that cows raised on grass have 80% less E. Coli in their systems. This is especially troubling considering the fact that large amounts of the E. Coli in the systems of cows raised on corn become acid and antibiotic resistant. So, not only is the cow sicker, but the sickness may be passed on to humans.

And, finally, grass fed beef means environmentally sustainable practices. Unlike corn, which is regularly harvested and replanted, grass is perpetual. This means less carbon from harvesting machines, and deeper roots in the soil, which leads to less soil erosion and other forms of degredation. Also, since cows naturally spread manure as they graze, there is less need for additional manure management.

Luckily, Georgia is home to White Oak Pastures, which sells grass fed beef to Publix and Whole Foods Markets. For a complete listing of retailers in Georgia or any other state, visit their website, linked below.
