So Ben Affleck is Batman. At least, he will be in the Batman/Superman movie coming out in a couple years. People are angry. I'm not surprised, but I don't quite feel anger either. Look, Daredevil was far from my favorite superhero movie. However, when I think about it, it is far from my least favorite either.
I don't own Daredevil and I haven't watched it really since it came out, but there were elements of the movie that weren't all that bad. For example, some of the interpretations of Daredevil's sight were cool and I remember at least laughing at the antics of Bullseye. Sure, there were bad elements like the playground fight and some of the music choices. One thing that wasn't bad however was the acting of Ben Affleck.
Listen, when I think superhero the first thing I think of is not Ben Affleck. I don't envision him as a particularly good fighter for one. That said, explain to me what was so bad about his acting in Daredevil. I'm not saying Ben Affleck can't be a bad actor at times. I am just saying that if anything ruined Daredevil it was not Ben Affleck's acting.
Sure, this is all opinion, but I feel like when people bash Daredevil they are usually bashing elements that have nothing to do with Ben Affleck's acting. So, I don't believe that he has already proven to be bad in a superhero role. I thought he worked as Daredevil just fine, but other aspects of the movie brought it down.
Now, enough about Daredevil. What about Batman? Well, Batman has two sides: Bruce Wayne and The Dark Knight. I believe that Ben Affleck will have no problem playing Bruce Wayne. He has money, looks, and charm in real life so it won't be a stretch for him to act like he has this in a movie. The Dark Knight is where the questions come in. Can he be brooding? Can he put fear into people? I think the brooding aspect he can handle, but it's the fear aspect I am not as sure about. However, I still believe he will succeed as Batman.
Why do I believe he will succeed as Batman? Well, first of all, he is an actor. I know that doesn't mean he is a good actor, but he is an actor. Actors act differently than they are perceived in real life all the time. Ben Affleck may not be an intimidating guy, but remember he will be under the cowl of Batman so his face will look different than we have seen it before.
Secondly, he may not need to even be that intimidating. This interpretation of Batman is up to the writers and director of this movie. They may play the detective side of Batman up more than anything here. He may not be as much of the Dark Knight as in other versions of Batman seen in comics and movies.
Thirdly, I think that we are past a certain era of Batman in cinema. We have already had the cheesiness of George Clooney's Batman and will not see that kind of Batman tried again. We are in a great era for comic book movies. They have never been better. We just had an amazing Batman trilogy. They are not going to take a step back and make Batman comical again.
I think people are too harsh on Ben Affleck. His last movie was good and he was good in it. People even chose to give the movie some awards including best picture of the year! So, as of right now, he is in a good place. Shouldn't we rally behind him and give him some support after a job well done? Why bash him and bring him down after he did something well liked? Can no one be forgiven for past movie sins? Who has made nothing but good movies anyway?
I believe that Ben Affleck will find it within himself to become a good addition to the Batman movie acting canon. I have not given up on Batman on the movie screen. Batman is in a good place right now and I see only a bright future for him in the horizon. Go ahead: complain and bash Ben Affleck if you want. I'll be over here waiting to give him a high five and cheer him on as he makes his way to the movie set.
