Why I Don’t Write about Video Games and Evercon 2014

With Christmas over and the PS4 and Xbox One launched, this seems like a good time to knock off another New Years writing resolution. I've written that I don't plan to talk about video games in this column; today I explain why.

1st. I’m not staying up to date on video game topics. I’m not buying any of the new systems. I own a Wii, a Playstation 2, and our faithful friend Lappy the laptop (who‘s getting up there in years). That means playing new games is rare, which makes covering them an issue. Unless I mooch off friends new games are pretty much no-go. There are plenty of good reviewers here.

2nd: Video games don’t interest me, at least not enough to write on. I try to limit my video game time since it cuts into writing time and game time. Honestly, I don’t enjoy video games as much as I used to; I don’t want to write about the latest Call of Duty or Madden NFL. I’m not knocking video games; I just don’t get excited about them anymore.

3rd: I’m not good at writing about video games. This is tied to #2, but deserves it‘s own point. Trust me, I’ve tried. The results weren’t worth reading. I’m better at recognizing the strengths and weaknesses of my preferred game types.

Someday I do want to talk about how board-, card- and pen& paper games influenced video games. I’d also like to point out the limits of computer games that tie into why I prefer P&P, but that’s a whole other article.

Speaking of both video games and other topics, Evercon 2014 starts tomorrow, Friday the 10th and runs until the 11th. I’m not sure if I can make it, but I recommend going if you’re in Wausau and a gamer.
