Why excessive ab exercises won't give you abs

Many people believe the way to get a six pack is to do thousands of crunches and sit-ups. But experts shed a different light on this common myth, and why it won't lead to a flat stomach.

Abs are hidden under a layer of fat

What does this mean? Basically, if you have an excess layer of fat on your abdominal area, your muscles won't peak through no matter how hard you try. The key to achieving a six pack is the right diet and nutrition. And, the right exercises. Squats and planks are far more beneficial for the body than crunches. These particular exercises strengthen the core while burning fat at the same time. Interval training involves a high level of cardio, important for burning the belly fat.

Having a low body fat percentage is also important when it comes to working towards a six-pack. For men, abs are usually visible at around 10% body fat, and for women 16%. This takes a fair amount of time and effort to achieve, but can be attainable.

Keep in mind that nutrition is key. A clean, calorie controlled balanced diet can help to shed off the extra layer. Adding fat burning foods such as lemons and blueberries can also help to speed up the process. To find the right diet plan for you, consult with your local nutritionist or trainer.
