EA still seems dead set on trying to overtake Call of Duty, and it's still not going to happen. But that's not going to stop them from trying. Battlefield 3's campaign seems like a poor attempt to try and do what Call of Duty has done well year after year. And between Battlefield 3 and the last two Metal of Honor games EA's military shooters seem to stand out less and less each time. At least campaign wise it does.
Pursuing this Call of Duty copycat thing even further is a bad idea, and that is why they should bring back the Battlefield: Bad Company series. While technically the Bad Company series plays just like Battlefield 3, Battlefield 3 is missing the thing that made Bad Company stand out from other military games: personality.
Instead of trying to blend in with Call of Duty, Bad Company actually stood out by having a cast of memorable characters. While the first Bad Company didn't have much in the way of drama, the characters were still way easier to care about then any of the action movie charactertures that seem to be in almost every military shooter.
The first Bad Company is easily one of the funniest games in recent memory. Even Bad Company 2 has a good amount of humor. These aren't just one-liners spewed out in the middle of battle, there were also humorous moments in the campaign itself. It's easy to forget you're playing a military shooter when you're driving a golf course while mowing down enemies.
There's hardly any room for things like these in this realistic military action movie that Battlefield is trying to be. Call of Duty has all ready nailed that, and you should do what you can to stand out from that. The Bad Company games sold well and stood out from the other shooters on the market. Unless Battlefield 4 is going to be drastically different from what they've shown of it, they should really bring back the Bad Company series.
