If you have a Chihuahua (two or more), you may wonder if it is normal to see it tremble and shake. Although most of these little guys do not shake all the time, they do have a tendency to do so more than other breeds for various reasons. It is kind of in their DNA. However, if you have concerns above and beyond normal behavior, never hesitate to contact your local Rockford-area veterinarian as listed below or one closest to your home for a medical consultation.
Aside from the chilly issues common with most people and other pets, a Chihuahua may do so because of an underlying problem. A medical issue affecting many dogs of this breed is hypoglycemia. Small dogs are extremely prone to low blood sugar, especially during the early morning hours before being fed. Your dog may be shaking and appear weak and lethargic. Sometimes diet and a dab of honey can help resolve this issue.
Since breeders keep trying to create the best, most unique and tiniest of Chihuahuas, all that pent up energy in that tiny body comes out through trembling and shaking. After all, this breed of dog thinks of itself as a giant Great Dane. Some faulty breeders crossbreed, putting the health of the pups in peril. Do your homework before adopting such a tiny little baby.
When the Chihuahua gets excited or anticipates change, especially with new guests and visitors, it may almost seem to shake uncontrollably. If you react to that shaking, at that particular moment, your dog may develop this into a form of communication to express emotion. Ignore your dog temporarily until the guests are in and sitting. Your dog will calm down, at which time you want you can pick it up and love it. The dog learns to be a little more submissive and not so stressed with the arrival of new people
Some Chihuahuas shake out of fear, especially if previously subjected to some form of abuse. Others may be fearful all the time and need more reassurance from their pet owners. Such nervous, fearful behavior can be accompanied with whining and crying. Speak to your dog in a soft quiet tone of voice and remove him/her from the fearful, nervous situation.
Obviously, your dog may be shaking and trembling from aches, pains and discomfort. Be sure to check your dog for any medical issues, especially if the shaking is uncommon for your particular pet. If you have a Chihuahua that shakes, it could be the result of an underlying issue or just that special trait of a little dog with a bigger-than-life personality.
