Young girls are kidnapped, and sold into slavery, priests are beheaded, churches are burned to the ground, millions of Christians are forced to subsidize baby killing by a government mandate, as the Truth of Jesus is besmirched, not because of Creeds or doctrine, but because of the living presence of the Holy Spirit within them.
It is not the Crucifix, nor is it the Bible, which brings worldly animosity to the disciples of Christ; rather, it is the Spirit which animates the Life of Jesus within them, which reveals a countercultural Love which challenges, and topples, purely worldly regimes.
And this is where the hate of the world always meets the Love of the Cross.
"Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope, but do it with gentleness and reverence, keeping your conscience clear, so that, when you are maligned, those who defame your good conduct in Christ may themselves be put to shame. For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that be the will of God, than for doing evil." 1 Peter 3:15-18
Bible thumping, angrily, proudly, never wins converts.
Most of the time, quoting Sacred (yes, Sacred!) Scripture in response to an atheist-secularist attack on our faith will bring only scorn, mockery, and the rejection of our holy proposition. In actuality, it is not so much what we say (though we must always speak/proclaim the Truth), but how we say it, and what we do along with our words. For even the most pagan of pagans are capable of speaking eloquently. And even the most corrupt of tyrants wax poetic, and soar the rhetorical heavens.
What converts hearts--and enflames the hatred of the demonic--is the language of compassion, mercy, and forgiveness...wrapped in fidelity to the Truth.
For only in the Holy Spirit can a weak and finite human person abide by the Truth in both Mercy and Love. For the world will be merciful to those who abide by their lies. For instance, if you were to accept gay 'marriage' or contraception, the world would certainly forgive you of any personal weaknesses, allowing you full participation in publicly accepted discourse. But if you were to speak the Truth of 'the Right to Life,' or the wrongs of contraception, your PC banishment will be rapid and publicly terminal. On the other hand, the Christian, full of the Holy Spirit, against their own weaknesses, in defiance to the spirit of the world, would speak the Truth, defend the Truth, while practicing compassion, and forgiveness all the same.
And this unworldly balance is in the Spirit which the world does not understand.
"Jesus said to his disciples: 'If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always, the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept, because it neither sees nor knows him." John 14:15-21
