May God bless the people and families effected by the tragic events which unfolded at the Navy Yard yesterday. Our hearts and prayers go out to you. May God's love and light surround you and guide you. May you find peace. Amen.
Since the horrible act of senseless violence that struck the Navy Yard in Washington, DC yesterday, many people are confused and frustrated. They want to know how can God stand by and watch man’s inhumanity towards man without intervening? Why do we sin? Are we Divine puppets, or do we have a choice?
There is a big difference between saying the Divine knows what will happen and what could happen, especially when people are involved. There is good in the world and there is evil in the world, and humans have a great capacity for both. When giving us freedom The Divine did so knowing that much could go wrong.
God sets up certain scenes to unfold for us, not really knowing in advance if we will fail or not, because we do have free will and are not bound to follow any commands, but hoping that we will act for the greater good. God has faith in us! God's wish is that when we act out of our own realizations and determination, we will do so with a higher purpose in mind. We are always guided in our freedom towards positive choices, not manipulated, just nudged.
Remember that even though someone chose to commit an atrocious act at the Navy Yard here in DC yesterday, there were others who courageously stepped up and unselfishly chose to help wherever and however they were needed. This is how God intended it, for us to make the choice. It is our responsibility to do something, hopefully for the better.
It is not that Spirit just stands by and allows bad things to happen, we are sent to a situation where God sees Evil. We are the vehicles through which God acts. The question is not where God is, but where were we? Conditions occur and we respond to them, or we choose not to. By ignoring these conditions and simply turning away, we feed and nurture Evil.
We are divinely called toward responsibility and action, to stand up with conscious care. We are not without resources. God has given us the tools we need. If you see moral evil you must fight against it. It is your Divine responsibility. Human beings have the capacity to bring great goodness and healing, or they can destroy.
In the midst of all of this is The Higher Power, God. Not everyone believes in a Higher Power, some do. That said, the question is not ‘If God exists’ or ‘Why do certain things happen’, it really boils down to ‘What now?’ Sometimes it is helpful to see what good others have done when faced with their own tragic situations and try to find a bit of good in things, rather than just focus on the negative.
Remember, how you react is up to you. Your personal power lies within that reaction, and the ripples that follow come as they may no matter what you believe. Act with faith when trying to make sense of the world. Faith in that this world is an object of God, a Higher Force who loves it, created it, and has a purpose for it. Trying to make sense of it all raises many questions along the way.
What kind of God created the world? What kind of world did God create? Can’t God prevent the bad things from happening? I suppose God could have created a different kind of world, a world where everything followed a specific plan, but that doesn't seem to be the kind of world God wanted. There are life lessons that could be learned in that kind of world, but there are many others that could not. So God created a world where each of us is made with a part of Spirit inside, giving us the ability to interact with the Divine through events that take place, learning and growing with each and every event. Since everybody and everything has a bit of God in them we are able to connect to one another too, sharing the experience and lessons of these events.
Pockets of us strive to live up to God’s ideal, but as a whole we as a species are not there yet. What is holding us back? How are we utilizing this freedom God has given us? Is it really a Divine gift? Yes, but Spirit’s greatest gift is love and freedom is the necessary condition for love to bloom. The whole issue of man’s inhumanity towards man and God just standing by and allowing heartache causes many people to lose their faith, they seem to no longer care.
We must always care. We must never turn a blind eye to suffering. We must inspire good qualities of character to enter the world. Do good in the world. Do something. Anything. Create positive ripples to send out there and help with the weights of the world. Feed someone, cloth someone, make a difference somewhere. By undoing some of the hurt in the world you will feel the presence of Spirit in your own being. It is through acts of compassion and the struggles we find faith.
Operate with the knowledge that you are an active tool of the Divine, spreading the message of loving one another and forgiving your enemies. By modeling this behavior to lost souls we can assist in offering them the opportunity of redemption and transformation. Choose to serve. What can you do in your private life? What can you do in your public life? What message can you send out there? Always offer Hope. Stand beside those in pain and walk them towards a brighter future. Then they, once healed, can walk forward and make a difference in someone else’s world.
