Using performance enhancing drugs PED’s to increase athletic performance by increasing endurance and by supplying much needed oxygen through the bloodstream to enhance muscle power performance is indeed giving the user an increased edge against non-doping athletes.
What is EPO’s action

Erythropiotin EPO, based on a natural hormone produced by the body, used as a treatment for anemia, is a catalyst for red cell growth carry oxygen to all parts of the body. The way to measure red blood cells is to measure the hemoglobin in the body. Hemoglobin is the protein that makes up red blood cells. What happens when your hemoglobin falls below the normal 8 grams, you feel it. Symptoms: Your heart has to pump harder, you are short of breath with little activity, have a headache, feel dizzy, look pale and have pale lips.
EPO is typically used then blood is withdrawn and re-injected prior to competition. Olympic testing experts began to notice EPO’s illicit use and devised a test to detect it and to detect blood transfusions. When you are using blood passport (transfusions) your hemoglobin levels fluctuate markedly as the body stops making its own red blood cells.
Steroids are used in a variety of medications, and they too get abused by athletes
Asthma and sinus medications use steroids to open the air passages, David Clinger received a lifetime ban when he tested positive for clenbuterol during out-of-competition testing. Many PED’s are used during training, load up on muscle mass and endurance and stop them before competition to test “clean.” Clinger later tested positive for testosterone and Modafinil (used in cases of narcolepsy, Alzheimer’s, ADHD, obstructive sleep apnea, shift work sleep disorder, cancer-induced fatigue, for example and post-anesthesia, to fight fatigue and increase concentration, wakefulness and vigilance). Modafinil (also known as Alertec, Provigil, also used by soldiers in combat) is used against “dopamine-deficiency-disorder” Parkinson’s disease and depression and a host of like disorders, not a characteristic of methamphetamine (stimulant-wakefulness drug) users.
Winning matters
What happened to hard work honesty and honor? Small pharmaceutical companies have sprung up all over in the name of developing new and undetectable anabolic steroids. The prices are high because the market is there. Athletes are looking for “the edge” and are willing to pay for it.
Testers in turn test athletes during times when they are most likely to dope
Endurance athletes use them to be able to train harder with less rest. The USADA has changed it’s methods of testing after reformed dopers revealed this information. Past test samples due to regulations can be stored for up to eight years. Anti-doping testing used to be reactionary. They would hear about a steroid coming to market and think the athletes could be using it, prohibit it, and then develop the test. Now they are ahead of the game and work to predict what is being developed and develop testing for it. Marion Joes claimed for seven years. ”I’m clean and I’ve been tested more than any other athlete. WADA testing is going on for the 2004 Olympic games.
