When I heard about this case on the news, I was sickened and upset. I looked up the video online (thinking... hoping it was a hoax) and did a bit of research so as to write about it, to find a motive, a different angle. And I found it. I placed the YouTube video here on this article so you can watch the two videos I feel are connected in some way, and make up your own mind.
It is not new news that these girls placed a kitten, about 8 weeks old, into a microwave and turned it on. You can find the news article everywhere (http://www.lifewithcats.tv/2013/09/09/3-teen-girls-charged-kitten-safe-a...). There is no way to know for sure how long the kitten was in the microwave, as the video is spliced. However, I think it is no accident that the original video (posted on Twitter) was made to be only 10 seconds.
After looking around the internet, I stumbled upon this video: http://www.ebaumsworld.com/video/watch/82563805/ . It is titled Kitten Placed in Microwave for 10 Seconds. The video shows a man putting a black and white kitten into his microwave and closing the door. At first, I was preparing myself for something horrible, but within a second or two, I realized this video had been on the air for months and nothing had been done. IT made no news and no one was arrested, so it didn't take me long to realize the video was a joke. The microwave was not turned on. After 10 seconds, the door was opened and the man took the calm and relaxed kitten out of the microwave, marveling that he was "not hurt."
Did these teenage girls view this video and decide to see what would happen if a kitten was put in a microwave for real? The video itself is 10 seconds, the amount of time the other kitten sat in the hoax microwave.
Regardless of their reasoning, these girls have cold hearts and sick minds. Microwave ovens are not like a regular electric ovens that take time to heat up. The moment the "on" button is pressed, the process begins. Electromagnetic radiation fills the chamber and begins to heat up molecules. So, essentially, these girls put a tiny kitten into a radiation chamber. The fact the kitten came out with no radiation burns tells us only that the kitten was in the microwave oven for no more than a few seconds, but this does not negate the fact that even a few seconds must have caused the kitten severe pain. When the microwave was open, the kitten scrambled out in panic.
So, what penalty will befall these cruel gals and why did they decide to pull such a cruel and heartless act? The police holding them will get to the bottom of their motives and a judge will determine their fate (hopefully a cat-loving judge), but to most animal lovers, no penalty will be harsh enough.
