Why Dapudong and every single other Filipino boxer not named Pacquiao are bums

Follow 'dSource' on Twitter @itsDSourceBaby and on Facebook.

Correction: There is a Pacquiao that is considered a bum by the callous sect within Filipino boxing fans. They even have a nickname for him. They call him "Blo-Blo". That person of course is Manny Pacquiao's younger brother Bobby, who became infamous among hardcore Filipino boxing fans for his embarassing loss to a former conquered foe by his bigger brother, Mexican gatekeeper Hector Velasquez, wherein the younger Pacquiao was disqualified for repeated low blows in a fight that he was likely to lose in the score cards. After the fight, the TV commentator asked Bobby about his thoughts on being disqualified. This is when the young Pacquiao uttered the infamous line "I am not a blo-blo".

Add Edrin 'The Sting' Dapudong (19-2-0, 10 KOs) to the list. The boo birds have been calling. And judging by the reactions from the peanut gallery, aka the highly popular and unadulterated forums of 'PACLAND'after the Filipino's defeat at the hands of Wilberth “Hurricane” Uicab (28-5-1, 17 KOs), it's only a matter of time until this once considered prospect fades into the abyss. You can call it 'Death before Honor', because the much hyped fighter from Cotabato under the tutelage of Manny Piñol will likely be forgotten before he even became memorable.

His mentor Piñol absorbed the blame for Dapudong's shortcomings. In his column at Philboxing.com, Piñol pointed out the new training regimen introduced to his ward's program with just two weeks prior to the fight under Manny Pacquiao's former strength and conditioning coach Justin Fortune. The rationale behind Piñol's attempt to deflect blame upon himself has some validity in it, but at the end of the day, a loss is a loss. And with the way Dapudong was hyped prior to the fight, regardless if this training misFORTUNE was the true cause of Dapudong's lackluster performance or not, it will fall on deaf ears and be dismissed as just another excuse for 'an over-hyped bum' fighter. Not that I am saying Dapudong is a bum, but as much as perception isn't always reality, it is. And you wouldn't have to look further than the Filipino fans' response to Dapudong's loss. It doesn't help either that they've been let down through the same gimmick over and over again in the past. Sonsona, Concepcion, Bautista.. you can go through a long list. There's quite a few of them.

But listen.

The fact that Piñol felt he had to apologize for his fighter suggests what's wrong with the system. Piñol's gesture was classy and admirable, but he did not have to apologize or take any blame for his fighter's loss. This is a cutthroat sport and if anything, the only person I blame for Dapudong's loss is Uicab. Just like how I blame Carlos Tamara for Brian Viloria's fall and JuanMa Lopez for his drubbing of Bernabe Concepcion in Puerto Rico. The fact that Dapudong lost to a nobody should only suggest his true capability at this point. Over-hyping a fighter might be a big problem, but the bigger problem I see is how unappreciative and spoiled some Filipino boxing fans can be.

dSource's Mailbag: Sensible Mayweather fan speaks up

I get it. It's culture. Filipinos can be some of the most insensitive internet punks there is, but at the same time, it's a bad habit that isn't innate and can be stopped. Enough of it. It's not even funny. More than anything, it just points out the fair-weathered and fickle nature of some people and how it can easily rub off on others.

Without these kids that dream and aspire to become future champions, and without people like Piñol that help cultivate their dreams, Philippine boxing won't go anywhere. So call out the ALA boys and every other Filipino prospect that fails all you want, but just know, these are real people too. To kick a man while he's down is definitely not a trait I'm used to as a Filipino even when I refer to people I dislike. These kids put their heart, sweat and soul to better themselves and bring honor to the flag. What have you done? Let's be real here. There will never be another Manny Pacquiao. So instead of acting like spoiled bandwagoners, it's time to truly be behind our fighters if we are to expect great things from them and not bash them at the first sign of failure.

It's time to stop the ignorance... and it starts with every single person. Resist the childish name-calling and the hateful heckling. If anything, intelligently criticize if you must. There's a lot of instigators out there, otherwise known as 'Internet Trolls'. And to be honest with you, they're the real bums.

I don't care about your comment, you bum!....Like the other guy, I just don't want to scroll further down.
Well this is what I have to say: Dapudong is a nice guy....But he just don't have it.....he has power but lacks speed and technique. His last victory was just a lucky shot.....Jimenez is a bum that's why he outclass him. Kung hindi pa pinapanganak ang tatalo kay pacman......sad to say...hindi pa rin pinapanganak ang papalit sa kanya......to carry on the torch.....Donaire is still untested at this point.

what's ur point mr guillermo. You said it, a los is a loss. It's not our fault as fans to be disappointed to an overhyped fighter. Managers should get it straight if their fighter doesn't have a 'sting', they don't sell it like they 'idiotically' do At the end of the day it's our money and our flag. We want only our money's worth and we want only those whho can truly represent the flag. Mr pinyol should know it. ALAM NILANG PIPITSUGIN IPAGYAYABANG PA. KUMBAGA, ALAM NAMAN NILANG SISIW PA ILALABAN NA NILA TAPOS IBEBENTA SA MGA TAGAHANGANG KATULAD NAMJIN NA WALANG KATULAD ANG BOKSINGERO NILA. Now whose fault is it if we buy into this hype then find out later on that we have a 'bum' and be disappointed? We fans also deserve some respect. I f we are disappointed at one fighter then give us a better one.

this writer is absolutely correct! filipino fans are the most fickle and bandwagon in the world. what gets me is you don't see mexican fans, puerto rican fans or even american fans put down their fighters like filipinos do. just shows how little they know about boxing. and by the way, for all you filipinos who thought that mexico's boxing was slipping, look again. currently mexico has 9 world champions, with more current ex-champions than any country in the world. and mexico has more blue chip prospects than any country. viva mexico cabrones!!!

  • Goblet Squat 1 year ago

Mexicant please. Mexican fighters are the dirtiest fighters in the sport, not to mention the mexican run WBC is the most corrupt governing body out there. They practically hand out championships like candy, especially to undeserving fighters, but as long as your mexican u get a shot. Not too hard for a mexican fighter to win a mexican belt fighting IN mexico. Way to unfairly run up the count.

And if not for the passionate following Filipinos have brought to the sport, boxing would likely be on extreme life support right now, so shut that ignorant mexican mouth of yours. We've been throwing parades for our champions since the 1920's puto.

    @ Goblet Squa

Filipinos who don't take PEDs often lose, like Bobby Pacquiao. Ciso Morales and Z Gorres(whatever kind of name that is) forgot to take the PED against Fernando Montiel. Rodel Mayol forgot to take the PEDs against Ulisses Solis and Adrian Hernandez. Johnriel Casimero forgot to take the PEDs against Ramon Garcia Hirales. Mark Melligen forgot to take the PEDs against Michel Rosales. Richie Mepranum forgot to take the PEDs against Julio Cesar Miranda. Manny Pacquiao forgot to take the PEDs against Erik Morales in his first fight, etc.

Don't forget also Nonito Donaire, Gerry Peñalosa, Luisito Espinosa and the late Gabriel "Flash" Elorde. They were also excellent world class fighters. But are they tested for illegal substances? No, they are not... Stop the stubborn accusations...

God bless Dennis Guillermo for keeping it real with the Filipino community. It's good we have ONE OF OUR OWN speaking on issues like this, rather than old white men like Michael Marley who are NOT part of our culture and are really ignorant with Philippine boxing as a whole, except for anything Manny Pacquiao related of course.

I truly believe the Philippines has the talent to emerge as a boxing superpower in the next generation or two, but right now it's hard to tell if Pinoy boxing is in dire straits or just going through some growing pains. Two things we need: world-class conditioning coaches and competent managers/promoters who will not sacrifice our young bucks for a quick cash grab.

  • arturo zamora 1 year ago

    @ goblet,

you sound very jealous of mexicans. here are the facts, with the exception of pacquiao and donaire, the philippines NOBODY! for a country of 96M people, you aren't crap in boxing or in any other sport. and filipinos make boxing go? you people can't even support pacquiao in PPV events. it is us mexicans who run boxing and are the most respected fighters. you pinoys are nothing but a joke. nobody likes you in boxing because of your racism, and your blatant bandwagoning. mexico has developed 110 world champions to the philippines 33. mexico owns filipinos in world title fights at 46-24-4. eat your heart out pinoy puta!

  • KKKKK 1 year ago

Mexicans, probably have more boxing greats, but a single Filipino legend beat all your mexican greats and legends, and Manny is not even done yet, so eat your heart out mexican putos.!!!

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

how dumb are you? just how many mexicans boxers out there that produced your 110 world champions??compare it to the filipino boxers who reached 33 based on your count?? im pretty sure there are too many mexican bums as compared to filipinos if we are to strictly count the details.. not to mention that boxing is the main sport in mexico.. come here to the philippines and play billiards and we are gonna all your players 100% bums...

  • Mr. Glove 1 year ago

Boxers are bound to lose to better boxers. This is just simply the nature of the sport. No matter how good a boxer is, someone is going to beat them sooner or later.

Look at Pacquiao, he got beaten 3 times so far, but he still ended up as one of the most legendary boxing greats. In boxing, losses are not always that unexpected. You expect boxers to lose, and if you're a boxer, you expect yourself to train hard to avoid losing.

It's not a matter of who trained the most, it's a matter of who is more skillful.

  • rmg1115 1 year ago

Manny lost several times in the past but look at him now. He is still young and he could learn a lesson from the loss.
It looks like Edrin was over trained and it looks like he was not properly advised during the fight. When he was on the offensive, he was doing very well...but when he was counter punching, he was losing the fight. Since Uicab was the quicker fighter, he should have initiated the offense by jabbing followed by a combo and get out. I don't think the trainers saw that.

His movement was a little bit lethargic. I think Pinol was right about the training. No matter how good your training is, if you don't allow your body to recuperate, you get over trained. Your muscle becomes stale and does react fast on what your brain tells you. I think that's what happened to Edrin last night. He got hurt in the 4th round and also a little bit in the 11th. He fought a courageous fight and he should be proud of himself.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

Mr. Guillermo I think you are also part of the hype machine thats why we fans are hoping this and that fighter will be great someday. You are one of the reasons why many Pinoy boxing fans are quite disappointed with some of the fighters

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

Sometimes the truth it hurt manny pinol knows it his boy is not ready and he feeds him to the lion just like the rest of his talent boxers. he should know it better and specially going to enemies turf his making manny his not the one who got beat up. but he should make his talents of boxers must make alot of fight before giving them title match and feeding to the lions specially in america american fighters is built by greatness as mayweather said step up your game plan.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

'cause we have prospect and most promoter in the phillippines there interest is first before there talents. they should fight more not just in asia but more in america but not giving title fight right away doesnt matter if from mexico or central, nourth or south america we should make sure they are ready for war not just overhyped.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

make example od donnie nietes he beat mexican fighter 3 or 4 times in enemies turf it just a matter of time he will get beat up by mexican 'cause they wont stop. they will do everything or find away to get you. the phillippine promoter stop sending donnie nietes ahas in mexico next fight atleast in america its okey so for sure they wont cook the fight. see what happen to rodel mayol first fight to nino low blow and the bell rang and heat him again rematch it in enemies turf again then he lost. the phillippine promoter must stop sending our fighter from mexico or enemies turf to much once its okey but back and fourth its more possibilities they going to loose in the enemies territtory and its proven just like dapundong and the rest of the boxer meet them half like in united states so for sure they wont cook the fight. the mexican promoter outsmarting the phillippine boxing promoters 'cause they acccpet the fact our boxer beating up there boxer and for there advantage they want to invites our fighter to fight there fighter in there own turf. whats with that?

  • jackbw9 1 year ago

Then you should stop blowing smoke up Nonito's @$$, Dennis. He's a great fighter but still got flaws to fix. Unfortunately he's gotten cockier in the ring than he needs to be. Don't wait for him to lose like everyone else. Help him fix his style before its too late! He's the one who could carry the torch after Manny.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

we knows most of our boxer in the phillippines dont finish high school or college and most are cme from poor family from provinces or countryside but have talent in boxing the problem is in the promoter they take advantage of there talents just for there own interest first. i'm not saying ask all the boxer in the phillippines if they know what there are signing for.

  • nogaro 1 year ago

This writer is also a bum

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

I'm the one who mention about overhyped prospect boxer of our in the phllippines there good just like bautista, concepcion, jaca etc. where are they now there promoter knows they are not ready to fight in america and they give them title shot without fighting more here in america see what happens the problems is not the the filipino prospect boxer its the promoters there own interest first.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

It just happens that mexico is a close proximity in location to America, that's why there is more of their mexican boxers making news, just imagine just across the border, while Philippines is more than 12,000 miles away. There is too many factors involved.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

We knows filipino fighters dominates fighting in asia. but fighting in america like north, south or central america its very competitve and its different levels of a fight in here compare in asia. the coach and fighter here are very good.
