Why coffee is the best first date

You may disagree immediately that meeting for coffee is the best first date idea.  It’s not surprising if you’re thinking, Coffee? Not cocktails? Let these reasons convince you that coffee is a great choice for a first date.
1. It’s cheap.  Chances are that you don’t know your date very well if it’s the first time you’re meeting.  Why spend 10s of dollars on someone who may not be worth your hard earned cash when you can have a coffee date for under $10. Meeting for drinks could cost you at least $30, and dinner could be even more.  Plus, you’re stuck at dinner.  It’s easy to break free from a coffee shop if your date turns out to be a dud.
2. It’s flexible.  Coffee is acceptable almost anytime of day.  If you’re an early riser, meet for a morning coffee.  What’s the best time to meet for coffee?  Around 3 or 4 pm.  Worst case is you sit and chat for an hour or less while getting your afternoon pick-me-up, then say good-bye and go out with your friends.  Best case is you sit and chat while the hours pass, get refills, share a pastry, and suddenly it’s dinner time.  If it’s going well, you can casually move on to dinner or alcoholic drinks.  The date can be as short or long as it warrants.

3. It’s casual.  There's no need to dress up for a coffee date.  There’s less fashion pressure for this low key date.  Of course, you should always put effort into your appearance on a first date, but you can leave your heels at home (girls) and throw on a baseball hat if that’s your style (guys).
Where to go for a coffee date?  Starbucks is a classic choice with a variety of options for both coffee and non-coffee drinkers. Find the location  nearest you here. Starbucks also offers free refills on coffee while you're sitting in the shop. If you’re in downtown Boston, try The Thinking Cup.  Located on Tremont St. bordering the Boston Common, this quaint new European cafe offers a trendy yet comfortable decor, upscale coffee drinks, and elegant pastries.  Read my review here.  Boston Common Coffee Co is a more casual downtown coffee shop choice.  In Cambridge, check out Crema Cafe in Harvard Square for an independent cafe with delicious Mexican hot chocolate, or Cafe Luna in Central Square, home of the 'dirty latte.'  In Brookline’s Coolidge Corner, Finale Desserts is fancier choice where desserts are the main show and coffee is a fine supporting actor.

Coffee dates are not limited to first timers; couples at any stage of dating can enjoy a warm mug of caffeine while relaxing and catching up on a comfy sofa outside of the home.  If you’re looking for a casual, cheap, and fun date go for coffee!
