Hatred of any human being is simply not Christian.
The old saying 'hate the sin, love the sinner' is easier said than done. Yet, in the struggle to extricate the sinner from the hatred of the sin, an age old struggle, we must continue, as faithful disciples of Christ, to hate the sin in loving obedience, while loving the sinner in the solidarity of repentant sinners seeking the Savior.
This Christmas season, the struggle is between the urge to be gay, and the grace to be happy.
"Therefore the Lord himself will give you this sign: the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall name him Emmanuel." Isaiah 7:10-14
Jesus came into the world, not to fulfill His own agenda, nor did He come to serve His own personal inclinations, but to obey the Will of the Father, denying Himself all the Way to the Cross…and beyond. Jesus suffered every kind of temptation known to man; yet, He remained Holy and unstained from sin. Happiness, or the theological definition of this--Beatitude--is not found in self-serving, self-gratifying activity.
Yet, we must never forget that God does not hate the homosexual person.
The homosexual inclination is a mystery. It is nothing new, as history reveals this inner struggle within the human person in ancient times. God loves every man, woman, and child. He loves the person with a homosexual inclination just as much as anyone else. But to act on that homosexual inclination is a grave sin. It is, moreover, a grave sin to act on any depraved inclination: the inclination to lust (heterosexually=adultery or premarital sex), the inclination to steal, the inclination to lie and cheat, or the inclination to anger and violence are but a few examples.
Happiness is in imitation of Jesus; to deny oneself for Love of God, neighbor, and self.
"Who can ascend the mountain of the LORD? or who may stand in his holy place? He whose hands are sinless, whose heart is clean, who desires not what is vain." Psalm 24:1-6
God alone is Holy! Jesus (and Mary, by Jesus' grace) alone is without sin! So, casting stones at 'gay' people will never bring the Christian disciple true happiness. True happiness will come from unceasing, uncompromising gospel evangelization. This includes sharing the gospel truth of happiness, with our homosexually inclined brothers and sisters, of the Mercy of God, and the abundant, and ever-present, grace of God found in repentance, confession, chastity and obedience.
Yes, this is a Cross! But, in the greater yes of Jesus and Mary, this is Resurrection in New Life!
"Mary said, 'Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.' Then the angel departed from her." Luke 1:26-38
Mary never expected a baby in her sexual virginity. Yet she was blessed with overwhelming happiness in her obedient 'yes.' Jesus prayed that the Father's wrath would be taken away in the Garden of Gethsemane; but in His obedience in 'Thy Will be done,' Jesus Rose to the perfection of human Beatitude for us! Likewise, many a good man and woman struggles with the urge to be 'gay.' Yet, in the grace of God, in the grace which flows from prayer and the Sacraments (particularly in sacramental confession, and in the Eucharist), they too can find the paradox of happiness in the 'Yoke of Christ,' the Cross of their salvation.
The question for the rest of us is, will we be their aid in finding this Yoke (as Pope Francis exemplifies), or will we be just another finger pointing obstacle?
