Why are my bulbs coming up??

Daffodils have been peeking up all over the Bluegrass for weeks now. They usually don't come up until the end of January or the first of February. The annual Bluegrass is growing, Ground Ivy is blooming, some Camellias have already bloomed and fell off, wild garlic (wild onions) are up about 5 inches, and the pussywillow are starting to bud.  Even forsythia is showing some color during the mild weather of January.

It may seem too early for this unmistakable sign of spring, but it’s not unusual for the shoots of early daffodils to begin pushing up through the ground. The best thing to do is nothing. There really isn’t anything you can do about it know. You can spread some pine straw or other mulch around the emerging bulbs, but these bulbs are tough.  Gardeners are at the mercy of the weather fluctuations, but generally, a blast of cold weather won’t hurt the daffodils. If we get a freeze while only the leaves are up, they should survive without a problem.

The same goes for the bulbs of the "Naked Ladies" - their leaves are up and lying on the ground.  Crocus and grape hyacinths are all in the same category.
