In recent years, the music video game industry has pretty much been declared dead in the water by mainstream gamers who played Guitar Hero III or the original Rock Band once or twice in 2007. With shelves overflowing with Guitar Hero and Rock Band titles in recent years, a clearance music video game is pretty much commonplace at any given Target or Best Buy.
Face it, everyone has fallen into the point where music games just didn't have the allure they once did. Whether it was when games were being released monthly or when you realized you have over 300 downloadable tracks that you haven't played and have no desire to, you've had at least one moment where you realized the genre was getting a little stale.
Fear not downtrodden members of the music game fanbase. Harmonix and Neversoft understand the burn out and have made very sure that 2010 is the year that music video games finally take the genre back to their former glory and beyond. The innovations that are being brought on are not just cosmetic or party-based gimmicks as they have been recently; these innovations have the potential to change the fanbase completely, or at least win back the disgruntled fans.
From Rock Band 3's enormous list of features, including Pro-Mode which is sure to please fans of real instruments to Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock's back-to-basics approach, there's no reason that music video games won't return to the prominent status they once had. It all goes back to the music games being different. Even though this was brought up in a previous edition, it really is a key point that the developers of each series have hopefully learned.
Will there be naysayers to this renaissance of the genre? Of course there will be. There will be those who refuse to be pleased, those that thrive off of complaining and those who choose to restrict themselves to a genre or two without even trying others. How does a fan of Guitar Hero or Rock band deal with those folks? No need. While they're in their living room commenting on this article, you'll be too busy enjoying the comeback of one of the mightiest genres of the past decade.
