Whooping cough in babies is a serious condition most often found in infants and children that affects the lungs and breathing tubes. Whooping cough, also known as pertusis, can cause server and ver rapid, loud and constant coughing. This condition is especially disconcerting because babies are not fully developed and therefore can be deadly.

Whooping cough, a bacterial disease, is contagious and the babis can contract this disease form older siblings and adult who may not be aware that they have it. Some of the symptoms of whooping cough are:

  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Sneezing
  • Mild cough
  • A pause in breathing in infants (apnea)
  • Children and babies can cough very hard, over and over
  • When children gasp for air after a coughing fit, they may make a whooping sound. This sound is where the name "whooping cough" comes from. Babies may not make this sound.
  • Babies and young children may turn blue while coughing from lack of oxygen and vomit after the fits.
  • Coughing fits can last for 10 weeks, and sometimes recur with the next respiratory illness. www.cdc.gov

There is hope -- the DTaP vaccine. The DTaP vaccine is a combination of two other vaccines: diptheria and tetanus. This helps protect fro this serious and potentially deadly disease.

Children should have regular wellness checks but if you suspect your child f having whooping cough, do not wait for the next check-up, get them to your physician as soon as possible.
