Whole Foods quarterly earnings show sharp rise in February report

Whole Foods started in Austin, Texas, in 1980, with the combination of several health food store owners who decided to collaborate on one larger store. Their website notes it had 19 employees in their first store.  Their first years in Austin, with historic floods and other events, were not easy and Whole Foods almost closed.

But what a change!  Today there are over 300 stores nationwide. And, this month, Whole Foods' quarterly earning report showed February 2012 earnings increased 33%, with sales growing over 8%. 

Not bad for tough economic times.

One key reason for their success may be their focus on health and wellness.  According to an article in NewHope360,  Whole Foods' mission is to promote healthier living.  Their stores are smaller and offer an array of organic foods and other products associated with healthier lifestyles. 

Given the dramatic increase in gluten intolerance and allergies along with other health issues, consumers are increasingly aware that their food has a direct impact on health, and are making purchasing choices accordingly.

It would appear that Whole Foods is seeing the benefit of this trend, and they are not alone.

A recent article about Trader Joe's points out that Trader Joe's sales per square foot, at $1300, is triple that of Walmart ($400).  Trader Joe's does not have Whole Foods' level of organic focus in its history or mission but it is known, as is Whole Foods, for having a select array of produce and food options--including a good selection of organic.

Both stores focus on having the best products rather than every product available--these are not Wegman's or Walmart. However, both stores' primary mission is to provide healthy, quality food and their bottom lines show the success of their mission.
