Whole Foods Market is the first national grocery chain to require that all GMO (genetically modified) foods be labeled as just that. Whole Foods has agreed to give suppliers five years to comply with the labeling of GMO foods, which may be disappointing to some shoppers.
Whole Foods Market chain is making the demand for foods to be labeled as GMO in response to consumer demand. Readers may recall Whole Foods Market and some other grocery stores being criticized for having GMO products in their stores.
Although the FDA continues to state there is no difference between genetically modified food and those that are organic, many consumers disagree. More shoppers are heading to farmers markets to find vendors such as ColdWater Creek Farms located at the Atherton Market in Charlotte for organic foods they know are not genetically modified. This is probably the best way to buy any food directly from the grower.
The discussion of foods that are genetically modified and not labeled is not new. Some consumers may have initially felt helpless when the FDA shared that in their opinion labels should not be required.
With Whole Foods Market at least stating they will require labels on any item that contain genetically modified foods, other grocery stores are sure to follow. It stands to reason that the larger chains most are familiar with do not want to lose business to stores such as Whole Foods Market or any other grocery chain that may offer foods that are not genetically modified. Consumers should keep in mind their shopping habits could be the driving force for change.
