My first foster adoption event was held at Whole Foods Market located at 525 N Lamar Blvd in Austin on Saturday, July 30th. Mission Orange: Animal Rescue Day was the title Whole Foods Market utilized to showcase Austin’s animal welfare organizations. In February of 2007, these organizations established a partnership with ASPCA. During the beginning stages, ASPCA titled the program Mission Orange but has since renamed the program to ASPCA Partnership.
Clients of Whole Foods Market had an opportunity to speak to the individuals who work with these organizations and meet pets ready for adoption. Whole Foods also promoted the organizations’ wish list on their website as well as announcing the event to Saturday shoppers. Town Lake Animal Center, soon to be the Austin Animal Center in November 2011, is one of the ASPCA partners. Animal Trustees of Austin located at 5129 Cameron Road, Emancipet located at 7201 Levander Loop and Austin Humane Society located at 124 West Anderson Lane are the additional members. The following information is stated on ASPCA’s website, “With the dedication and collaboration of four different partner agencies, Austin is making a serious, successful effort to end the needless euthanasia of healthy adoptable pets.”
ASPCA’s website also states, “The community’s partner agencies include Town Lake Animal Center, the city’s open-intake facility, the Austin Humane Society, a private, non-profit animal shelter, Animal Trustees of Austin, a wellness and spay/neuter clinic, and Emancipet, a low-cost spay/neuter provider.” Town Lake Animal Center and Austin Humane Society are seeking foster homes. Of course, all four organizations are in need of volunteers to assist with numerous tasks at their centers. A few hours a week can make a significant difference to local residents and their pets. It’s an opportunity to meet new friends and share your skills.
Sarah Hammond, the Project Starfish foster coordinator, sent an email to foster parents asking them to participate. I was hesitant but Sarah felt the kittens were ready for this adventure. It turns out there was a family seeking two feline brothers, one active the other shy, one orange and the black. Oscar, a cream color tabby, the shy feline of the team and Felix, a brown tabby, fulfilled their dreams. Click here to view the video I created of the event and my foster kittens’ new family members. I truly am honored to reside in Austin and to be a member of the Project Starfish program at Town Lake Animal Center located at 1156 W. Cesar Chavez.
