Whole Foods Market in Sugar House is more than a grocery store, it is a community partner.
On Saturday, August 14, 2010 the store hosted its Third Annual Farmers and Food Artisans Road Tour, featuring a number of new and ongoing local vendors, providing customers an opportunity to sample products and obtain more information. Not all were food vendors, demonstrating Whole Foods' goal to improve the community and be a resource for customers; one of the featured vendors was Momentum Recycling providing private recycling services.
Whole Foods also sponsors a low interest loan program to small local producers. Thus far, $750,000 has been loaned to local producers in the Rocky Mountain area.
The plaza just outside the main entrance was the setting for many local vendor displays (others were inside the store) as well as live music; lunch service featuring local food products, including fresh Rocky Mountain area raised lamb; and face painting for children of all ages!
Saturday’s participating local vendors included:
- Botanica Apothecary - provided free soap samples like sweet lavender.
- Bubble & Bee gave customers an opportunity to trade in their old lip balm and get a brand new free one.
- Café Ibis One of their featured products was ground coffee specially formulated for ice coffee—brew, chill, and serve over ice--really refreshing!
- Cox Honey More flavors than you can imagine – vanilla creamed honey—yummy!
- Cy’s Eclectic - sauces galore!
- Kathy’s Krackers makes raw, gluten-free, flax seed crackers in Savory, Salsa, and Apple Cinnamon varieties.
- Laurie’s Buffalo Chips All nature chips and salsa!
- Mt Olympus Water sold bottled water before it was in! Their water comes from natural springs in Utah’s Mount Olympus Wilderness area – always refreshing!
- ProBar tasty organic whole-food meal replacement bar.
- Shepherd’s Dairy Located in Erda, Utah, this vendor offered tangy goat cheese samples. Did you know that goat’s milk is naturally homogenized, i.e., the cream does not separate from the milk? Moreover, it is easily digestible and a great alternative for those with cow’s milk allergies.
- Sibu offered samples of their moisturizers, soaps and other facial products and information on its oral supplements to improve you from the inside out.
- Sunbridge Growers – All about wheat grass.
- Tom’s Gourmet Dessert Sauce – They offered tiny scoops of ice cream with one of their delicious sauces. Caramel pecan was a winner!
- Vosen’s Bread offered bread samples including a seven grain baguette—very tasty and different than the more common French bread variety.
- ReDirect Guide a sustainable business directory and lifestyle guide – offices in Sugar House.
- Salt Lake Magazine Articles about Salt Lake. Check it out!
