Although GMO's are already either labeled or banned in 60 countries planet wide, the United States allows GMO foods to be sold to consumers with no testing on what the health effects could be and the US does not require labeling of the genetically altered foods. Since the battle of labeling GMOs has heated up we have seen multiple states adding the initiative to their state ballots, consumers are asking for non GMO foods and labeling in their local stores, there are renegades that are self-labeling foods in their local stores and we have people that are sueing companies that claim all natural and use GMO ingredients in their products, such as Frito Lay Inc. Well the call to arms was answered and the call to label it has been answered and confirmed, well at least with one grocery store chain.
Although Dave Murphy, founder of Food Democracy Now disagrees with the 5 year wait that customers have to wait for to see anything labeled, a spokesperson for Whole Foods Market says that time frame will give any food vendors, they deal with, time to change what they use for ingredients as well as who they get their products from if they choose too do so. If not I guess it is suffice to say the store will no longer buy from them. Whole Foods Market says they are answering what their consumers asked for and they are happy to comply. According to Takepart.com " Since 2009, the chain has been working with the Non-GMO Project, a nonprofit, third-party verification and labeling organization. Whole Foods currently carries over 3,300 verified non-GMO items from 250 brands. The products are the store’s fastest-growing category of nonperishable items."
What an awesome win for the people and for the world! In more recent news, Peru just banned Monsanto and GMOs in their country and Washington state will have an initiative on the 2013 ballet to have all GMOs labeled in their state!
