October 1 - Time to sign up for the Affordable Care Act. But how? Here are two steps to get you started.
2. If the site is not working (last report is that two-thirds of Obamacare Exchanges are having trouble), or you have no internet access, you can call this number: 1-800-318-2596 and talk to a live person who will answer questions and walk you through the registration online, or mail you more information about the plans available.
When I talked to some Chicagoans this afternoon about their experience with this registration process, the consensus was that patience would have to be the keyword here. Although no one I spoke to was able to register because of the system being overloaded, there was no problem in talking live to a person who could, at least, answer some questions.
Good advice? Don't panic. You have until December 15 to register if you want your coverage to begin on January 1, 2014.
Be informed. Begin by watching the video which accompanies this article. A first in a new series by Dr. Aaron Carroll, this is not a discussion of the pros and cons of the Affordable Care Act. It is simply an instructional video about what to do when it takes effect.
