Did you vote for your 'America's Favorite Dancer' after last week's two-hour final dance-off? The votes are in and on the Season 10 finale of Fox's "So You Think You Can Dance," Emmy-winning host Cat Deeley will announce Tuesday night the winners of this season's dance competition that saw twenty extraordinarily talented young dancers compete for top prizes. And, like last season, there will again be two 'Favorite' dancers, one from the guys, one from the girls. So... again, did you vote?
As noted by Entertainment Weekly Sept. 10, the final four remaining dancers of the season -- Aaron Turner, Amy Yakima, Jasmine Harper, and DuShaunt “Fik-Shun” Stegall -- all performed five times during the last competition show of the season on Sept. 3. But what it really comes down to is this: Whoever got the most votes between Aaron and Fik-Shun, and whoever got the most votes between Amy and Jasmine.
All are powerful performers in their own right, with Amy and Jasmine both being trained contemporary dancers, while Aaron is a versatile tap-dancer and Fik-Shun represents the world of hip-hop animation.
Folks watching the show will have to be a bit patient to discover the winners, however. President Barack Obama will address the nation midway through the two-hour finale -- all of which will be live. The show will resume after the president's address and is projected to end around 10:30 p.m. (EST).
Despite the unusual presidential "halftime show," the dance performances are expected to be top rate. Although none of the finalists will be dancing for votes this week, they will still perform routines. As in previous seasons, the finale will be composed predominantly of pieces chosen by the judges as their favorites for the season.
There will be one addition, however, chosen by the fans. Last week, Cat Deeley announced two dance selections from Season 10 that the fans could vote for to see performed on the finale. The selections were “Silver Screen,” featuring Malece and Jade; or “Wicked Game,” which Travis Wall performed with Amy. (And if you've seen the routines, it's a good bet that the Travis Wall-choreographed latter number will get the vote, given that after the actual performance itself, judge Nigel Lythgoe bestowed the well-deserved accolade of "genius" on Wall.)
But who will win? Jasmine seemed to be a judge's favorite throughout Season 10. She also had the "So You Think You Can Dance" connective backstory, where her previous boyfriend -- Season 9's fan favorite, Cyrus Spencer -- made the show and would later end their relationship. And there wasn't any judge -- guest or permanent -- that could get around saying something about her legs (because, well, girl's got forever Tina Turner legs). Amy also won high praises from the judges all season long, perhaps even getting a few more kudos where technical skills and precision were concerned.
Over on the guys side of things, Aaron and Fik-Shun are both consummate showmen, both rising to the occasion of going beyond their genres and both exuding miles and miles of personality. Whereas Aaron was undoubtedly more familiar with the various forms of dance and showed great skill, Fik-Shun's rough edges showed during a few of his performances. But if one was to give the win to the one that pushed the limits of their own skill-set, that win would go to the irrepressible Fik-Shun.
But who will actually win? That remains to be seen. All four deserve the win. In fact, there wasn't a dud in the top twenty finalists for Season 10 so the win will come down to skill and personality, much as it always does. But oddly enough for this season, most of the technical skill resided with the girls, while much of the flair and personality was displayed by the guys.
Guest judges for the finale include singer/dancer/choreographer/reality show personality Paula Abdul, "So You Think You Can Dance" alum and fan favorite tWitch, and award-winning producer/director Adam Shankman.
The "So You Think You Can Dance" finale airs at 8 p.m. (EST) on Tuesday, Sept. 10, on Fox Television.
