Who will be named best Super Bowl commercial of 2012?

The countdown is upon us. With less than a week to go until the Giants and the Patriots face off in what looks set to be a Super Bowl to be remembered, tensions in Indianapolis are running high.

In a matchup which sees Tom Brady go up against Eli Manning, Colts fans are left to decide who they want to be victorious; Peyton Manning's prevailing rival Tom Brady, or younger brother Eli?

With both the Giants and the Patriots having already arrived in Indianapolis in preparation for Sunday's showdown at Lucas Oil Stadium, the city is in a football frenzy.

However come game day the Lombardi trophy is not the only prize up for grabs, with many speculating over who will be awarded the title of most memorable Super Bowl commercial of 2012?

With the Super Bowl being the biggest televised sporting event in the world, being viewed by millions, it provides the most sought after advertising slot one could ask for, but they come at a price. The costly fee for one of these 30-second slots averages at around a whopping $3.5 million.

The highly anticipated commercials this year look set to be dominated by car companies which are on the rise again following their recent cut backs. This year however they look to take up around 33% of the 70 advertising slots.

Last year the award winning Volkswagen commercial was clearly among the top favourites, and with the sneak peak of this year's edition, humorously titled "The Bark Side", it looks set to carry on the Star wars theme from 2011 with the hopes of maintaining its popularity among viewers.

Other contenders in recent years have included big names such as E-Trade, Doritos, Chevrolet, and of course the timeless and ongoing battle between Coca Cola and Pepsi.

One thing is certain; advertisers are pulling out all the stops in hopes of creating the most memorable Super Bowl ad, with many set to feature celebrities such as Matthew Broderick, Jerry Seinfeld and David Beckham.

It's anybody's ball game.
