As first reported to the Irish Times earlier this month, U2's band manager Paul McGuinness says a new album by the Gaelic rockers is scheduled to be released in the Spring of 2011, prior to the first leg of their US tour. What's even more interesting is the fact that said album will have Danger Mouse in the producer's chair.
In an interview with the Australian newspaper The Age, U2 frontman Dave "Bono" Hewson was quoted as saying: "We have about 12 songs with him. At the moment that looks like the album we will put out next because it's just happening so easily." Bono has also announced that following that, the band will release a "club record" which will feature contributions from French DJ Dave Guetta, Lady Gaga-collaborator RedOne and will.i.am, whose group the Black Eyed Peas opened for U2 on their recent 360Tour.
Danger Mouse (aka Brian Joseph Burton) first gained recognition for the controversial Grey Album, a mashup of a cappella recordings from Jay Z's The Black Album with snippets from The Beatles' White Album. As Mr. Burton never received clearance from EMI (which holds copyright to The Beatles' catalog,) he found himself getting sued by the label, at the same time his work was being heralded as "Best Album Of 2004" by Entertainment Weekly and the Village Voice.
Burton's credits also include Dark Night Of The Soul, his musical collaboration with the late Mark Linkous (of the band Sparklehorse), as well as producing Beck's 2008 release, Modern Guilt. His current project, Broken Bells, is a collaboration between him and Shins' frontman James Mercer, who appeared alongside Suzanne Vega, Iggy Pop, Frank Black (Pixies) and The Strokes' Julian Casablancas (among others) on the Dark Night project.
