If your morning and bedtime routines are in place, they know when and how to put their toys away, then life’s daily routines flow without a fuss. As simple and unimportant as this may seem, it’s not! In this busy world of ours we all feel comfort in what’s routine. Sort of a behavioral “comfort food”!
Are your children able to “wait” a few minutes without whining or demanding what they want? Is bedtime an exhausting battle? If you’re raising your children with a few rules that you are being consistent with, then this is rarely a problem. When a child has predictable rules to follow, they feel much safer and healthier with this rhythm to their lives.
It’s the routines that create an inner structure and the ego boundaries in children. When a child knows what’s expected of them and they do it well, they feel good about themselves.
If your home has become full of miserable power struggles between you and your children or they are constantly negotiating with you or you can’t tolerate their anger towards you and just give in, you will know in your heart that you are resenting your child.
It’s important to realize that not providing the consistency, the rules and the limitations will result in more pain for the whole family in the long run. Children that have to have what they want most of the time often become demanding adults who are never satisfied. Your child is never too young to work with and to make the appropriate changes to their behavior! If you’re seeing patterns of behavior that you don’t like and don’t know how to stop, it’s important to get the help that you may need. Knowing that you are going in the right direction will not only help you become a stronger and more confident parent but will give your child the tools that they need to become successful and competent adults.
