WKYS has launched the "Who Got Next" contest for local rappers to compete for an opening slot at the Rock The Bells Music Festival in Washington, DC (RFK Stadium) on September 28-29, 2013. Rock The Bells is a nationwide hip-hop tour kicking off this weekend in Los Angeles. This year's show is headlined by J Cole, A$AP Mob, Wale, and Big Sean.
The way "Who Got Next" works is the musicians must submit their songs to the www.kysdc.com website by September 13th. The tracks must be original, clean-edited, and sample-free. The top ten finalists will be selected though online voting by WKYS listeners and an independent judging panel. The ten finalists will then face a second round of online voting (September 16th-23rd) to determine the winner.
"Who Got Next" has attracted a wide variety of talented rappers looking for their break in the music industry. Respected street MCs like Kool Robb, Blizzy Blaque, Bangman, and Black Diamond have entered the contest. The more established DMV artists like Laelo Hood, Trey Morset, Garvey, and Tricky Dice have thrown their hats in the ring as well. And surprisingly, a few rappers who have already achieved national recognition are also participating in the competition: RA the MC (X-Factor), Wordsmith (ASCAP Award winner), and Fatz Da Big Fella (Board Administration).
Although the odds are stacked against them, two young ladies, Rae Shine and Dutchess, are optimistic about their chance to make the top ten.
Rae Shine says she's looking forward to the challenge.
"I'm excited about being involved with the "Who Got Next" search for the opening act. I've been making waves in the DMV and I've already attracted attention from Universal Republic (Records)."
Dutchess, a femcee with unlimited potential, expresses supreme confidence in her lyrical skills.
"The great Sun Tzu once said 'You have to believe in yourself', and with that said, I'm coming for that #1 spot and nobody can stop me. I'm in my own lane!"
Go to the WKYS website to see all of the contestants and hear their song entries. You are allowed to vote for your favorite artist once per day during round one of the competition. Also check out the Rock The Bells website to see the entire festival line-up.
