Who are we protected from with a gun free zone?

I have been studying the phenomenon of the "Gun Free Zone" and after much analysis have discovered the group of people from whom we are being protected.  The Venn Diagram at the left is my representation of some groups of people in the United States. The overwhelmingly larger group is the sensible, law abiding majority that wouldn't shoot you if you made a really bad cup of coffee, or cut you off in traffic.  Even if you stole the parking place one of these people were turning their car around to get, they would not gun you down.  These people know that dead is forever, and guns are for keeps.  They reserve the use of deadly force for truly life-threatening situations and they have proven, on balance, that they can recognize these when they occur.

The red circle represents that small portion of humanity that regards everyone but themselves as expendable.  When pushed far enough, they go nuts and throw all civility and humanity out the window.  They go get a gun and perpetrate murder.  Even if they have to drive all the way home to get their gun, they are so mad they won't be dissuaded from their goal. They will plan and wait weeks or months if need be. They also don't think "Gun Free Zones" apply to themselves, and might be carrying a weapon in the gun free zone.

The tangent point between these circles represents the crowd that we are being protected from by gun free zones.  Normally they are law abiding and thus don't carry weapons into a posted gun free zone. These folks, howerver,  have incredibly hot tempers and amazingly poor judgment.  They also have no ability to think of consequences past the immediate moment.  They are the ones who get so angry, so fast that if they had a gun at the critical moment they would shoot you dead.  "Take that, you incompetent fool!"  If they had to leave the area and drive home to get their gun first, they would cool down and probably be deflected by a sandwich.

Now that my hypothesis has identified the group that we are being protected against, we have to weigh the benefit of that protection against the benefit we might get from the much larger, normal group being allowed to carry weapons everywhere there isn't an enforced, disarmed zone such as a secured courthouse with metal detectors and guards and secure storage for the weapons.  I don't know how many folks fall into the newly identified category, but I bet it is about as big as represented in the diagram.  I do know that statistically, concealed carry permit holders are more law abiding than the general public and that most carry their weapons quietly for years with no incidents at all.

I also can point to many examples where armed citizens have saved their own lives and often the lives of others because they had a self defense weapon at hand when they needed one.  We even have an Examiner dedicated to chronicling  those examples daily in the person of Eric Puryear.  If you don't have the means at the moment you need it, self defense is ineffectual.

I now make it a habit to ask businesses with posted Gun Free Zones who they are protecting us from.  They have yet to make a good case.  Most kick the reason for the sign "upstairs", saying it is for "insurance requirements" or "it is corporate policy".  Neither response addresses the logic,  justification, or the truth about the policy.  Let's keep asking that question until the purveyors of gun-free zones realize they have no answer.

Dan Bidstrup's Denver roots go back two generations. He has enjoyed target shooting for decades. He carries a gun along with a pen and pocketknife because it's another tool he might need.

I once went to a jewelry store that had a sign saying, "No carrying (and every other form of bearing) firearms in his store." I said to the girl behind the counter, "I see you have your 'Welcome, Robbers, Happy Hunting' sign up!" She agreed with me!

I maintain that if everyone knew that everyone was "carrying" there would not be any parking problems or "cutting people off" problems because the mind set would be back to what it used to be. And that is....mind your own business, take care of your own business, and don't tread on others.

re: being armed in a gun-ban zone
Mr. Bidstrup, are you suggesting that one who would "rather be judged by 12 than buried by six" should be placed in the same category as those who would shoot you over a parking space?

The ONLY people protected in a gun-free zone are the criminals.

How many school killing sprees would be cut short or not happen if there was the possibility of an armed adult in the school?

How many drive by shootings would happen, if bystanders could shoot back?

I'm referring to armed, proficient people aware of what's around them, and behind someone shooting a gun.

If you tried to get a no firearm ban at schools in Israel, they would laugh you out of the country! Schools have been targets of terrorist attacks in the past, and no doubt will be again.

BRAVO Dan!!!, So many NON- Gun Owners don't realize that the perpetrators totally disregard any signs against their carrying of guns. And that if everyone was allowed to carry a gun there would be far less crime since in the USA and beyond. Keep up the good work.
